Early life and background

Manu Bhaker was born on 18 February 2002 in Goria, a village in Jhajjar district, Haryana. Raised in a family that runs the Universal Public Senior Secondary School in their village, she grew up in Jhajjar and attended the family school before going on to study at DAV College, Chandigarh and Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi. Her formal education includes a bachelor’s degree in political science (honours) and a master’s in public administration from DAV College.

From an early age Bhaker was active in many sports. By her mid-teens she had collected numerous national medals across disciplines such as boxing, skating, volleyball, horse riding, martial arts and tennis. An eye injury sustained while playing volleyball led her to choose a non-contact sport, and she discovered shooting at about age 14. Her family supported her training: her father made an early financial investment to help launch her competitive career and later left his merchant navy job to back her ambitions.

Career

Bhaker competes primarily in 10 metre air pistol and 25 metre pistol events. She rose rapidly through junior ranks and achieved international success as a teenager. Early milestones include a silver at the 2017 Asian Junior Championships and a standout performance at the 2017 National Games where she won multiple golds and broke a national final score record.

2018 was a breakthrough year. Bhaker won gold medals at the Guadalajara ISSF World Cup and at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games, where she also served as India’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony. That year she set a new Commonwealth Games record in the 10m air pistol final at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and became the youngest Indian to win gold at an ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara.

Over the following years she continued to add medals at World Cup and Asian events, including team and mixed-team podiums at multiple World Cups in 2018 and 2019, and medals at the 2019 Asian Shooting Championships and the Putian ISSF World Cup where she set a junior world record in the 10m air pistol final.

Bhaker has represented India at multiple multi-sport events. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics she experienced equipment trouble during qualification when a pistol lever broke, which forced her to step away to address the issue. Domestically, she reclaimed national titles, being crowned women’s 10m air pistol champion for a second successive time at the 64th National Shooting Championship in December 2021.

At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou she was part of the women’s 25m air pistol team that won gold; in the individual 25m event she finished fifth. Her result at the 2023 Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon earned India a quota place for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Paris 2024 proved to be one of the most significant chapters of her career. Bhaker won two medals at the Games, including a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol individual event and a bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team alongside Sarabjot Singh. Her performances ended India’s 12‑year wait for an Olympic shooting medal and she received congratulations from the country’s prime minister. She was later selected as one of India’s flag bearers at the Paris closing ceremony, alongside P. R. Sreejesh.
