Manvendra Singh Jasol was born on 19 May 1964 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He grew up in a family with a military and political background; his father is Jaswant Singh and his mother is Sheetal Kanwar. He attended Mayo College in Rajasthan and went on to pursue higher studies abroad, including time at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts and a Masters of Arts from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He is identified with the Rajput community and follows Hinduism.

Career

Manvendra Singh began his professional life in journalism, working for publications including the Statesman and the Indian Express. He later entered electoral politics in the late 1990s as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

While serving with the Territorial Army, he saw action during the Kargil War in 1999 and holds the rank of Colonel in the Territorial Army. That same year he contested the Lok Sabha election from the Barmer-Jaisalmer constituency but was defeated by Sona Ram. He returned to win the seat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, defeating Sona Ram by a substantial margin. During the 14th Lok Sabha he represented Barmer-Jaisalmer and served as a member of the Standing Committee on Defence.

At the state level, he won the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha election in 2013 from the Shiv constituency as a BJP candidate. His relationship with BJP leadership became strained in subsequent years; in 2014 he was suspended from the party after campaigning against the BJP candidate in his father’s constituency. Ahead of the 2018 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly elections, he left the BJP and joined the Indian National Congress.
