Early life and background

Marcus Alan Luttrell was born on November 7, 1975, in Houston, Texas. He grew up in the Houston area and attended Willis High School before enrolling at Sam Houston State University. He left college in 1998 to pursue service in the U.S. Navy.

Luttrell has said he and his twin brother Morgan began preparing for service in special operations as teenagers, receiving early guidance from a retired Army special forces soldier who lived locally. That early determination shaped his path into naval service and the SEAL community.

Career

Luttrell enlisted in the Navy in March 1999 and trained at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He completed Hospital Corpsman school and entered the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) pipeline. A fractured femur delayed his original class assignment, but he finished BUD/S with Class 228 in April 2000.

After BUD/S, Luttrell attended Army Airborne School and later completed the 26-week SEAL Qualification Training (SQT). He earned the Combatant Swimmer (SEAL) NEC on February 2, 2001, and received the Naval Special Warfare insignia in January 2002. He also completed advanced medical training at Fort Bragg.

Luttrell served with SEAL Team 5, SEAL Team 10, and SDV Team 1 over a decade of service from March 1999 until 2009, attaining the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He deployed to Iraq in April 2003 and later to Afghanistan in 2005. In Afghanistan he was part of a four-man reconnaissance element operating in the Kunar Province during Operation Red Wings, a mission intended to disrupt or capture a high-ranking insurgent leader.

During that June 2005 operation, Luttrell’s team encountered local goat herders, a decision point that is central to accounts of the mission. Shortly afterward the team was ambushed; three teammates—Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, Petty Officer Second Class Danny Dietz, and Petty Officer Second Class Matthew Axelson—were killed. Luttrell survived the engagement and the events surrounding it formed the basis of his later writing and public profile.

For his service, Luttrell received numerous military decorations, including the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star with Valor device, and the Purple Heart, among other unit and campaign awards.
