Early life and background

Mark Bennington was born on 20 March 1976 in Davis, California, and spent his childhood between Davis and the South Sacramento neighbourhood. He discovered a passion for performance as a child and took part in school stage productions. At 18 he enrolled in the New Actors Workshop in Manhattan, an experience that launched his acting journey. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts and trained in theatre, including long stints in France and experimental work with Diane Paulus’s Project 400 troupe.

Career

Bennington’s screen career began in 2000 with roles in English-language projects such as the film And Then Came Summer and an appearance on the TV series Diagnosis Murder. He worked in American television across the early 2000s with credits that include Titans, Star Trek: Voyager, V.I.P., Charmed and NYPD Blue. After roughly a decade in television, he shifted focus and discovered photography in 2002, working initially with his grandfather’s camera and developing a successful career that saw his images published in major outlets worldwide.

His photography work led him back to India in 2010 for a project. While there he accepted an audition and won a role in the biographical film The Letters (2014). That return to acting opened doors to further projects in India: roles in Detective Byomkesh Bakshi (2015), and later appearances in Hindi films such as Kesari, Commando 3, Bhangra Paa Le, Angrezi Medium and Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh. He has also worked in regional Indian cinema, with credits on projects including RRR, Godfather and Devil, and has appeared in the Malayalam film Not Out.

On the digital and television front in India, Bennington has been part of several notable web series and shows. His credits include Karenjit Kaur – The Untold Story of Sunny Leone, The Family Man, Bombay Begums, Inside Edge, Human, Rocket Boys and a memorable turn as Donze in the OTT series Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo (2023).

Alongside acting and photography, Bennington’s creative life has included music and theatre direction. He played drums professionally for the Los Angeles rock band 50 Cent Haircut between 2005 and 2010, performing more than 400 shows and recording three albums. He has directed stage work, including productions staged in Los Angeles and, after a long absence from the stage, directing Jeff Goldberg’s The Mumbai Terror Attacks at Mumbai’s Royal Opera House in 2019.

Bennington has balanced careers across continents. He served as an adjunct professor of photography at Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications from May 2014 to June 2015, and his photographic exhibitions have been shown in cities including Jerusalem, Rome, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Berlin and London. His photography book Living the Dream: The Life of the ‘Bollywood’ Actor was published by HarperCollins in 2016; the project grew from his interest in capturing the working lives of actors and involved meetings with more than 100 performers in Mumbai.
