Mark Duplass Biography

Mark Duplass is an American filmmaker, actor, musician, screenwriter and author known for his work on independent films and television projects created in,

Early life and background

Mark David Duplass was born on December 7, 1976, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in that city, he attended Jesuit High School in New Orleans before continuing his education at the University of Texas at Austin and later at City College of New York. He grew up in a Roman Catholic household and has one sibling, his brother Jay Duplass, who would become a longtime creative partner.

Career

Duplass’s entry into film and television combined multiple creative roles: writing, directing, producing and acting. His early screen credits include co-producing the 1996 film Connect 5, and by the early 2000s he was producing and directing short films such as The New Brad and This Is John. Duplass first gained public attention for writing and acting in the 2006 feature The Puffy Chair, a film that helped establish his presence in the indie film scene.

Working closely with his brother Jay, Mark co-founded Duplass Brothers Productions, an independent film and television production company. The brothers developed a collaborative approach to filmmaking that often involved improvisation off an original script, shooting multiple takes and then rigorously editing scenes. Together they have written, directed and produced feature films including Baghead (2008) and Cyrus (2010), and they expanded into television with projects such as the HBO anthology series Room 104.

Mark has appeared on a number of television series as an actor. His credits include recurring or notable roles on The League, Maron and Comedy Bang! Bang!, and he co-created and starred in Togetherness, which earned several Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations. In addition to his dramatic and comedic work, Duplass has worked in documentary television; he received an Emmy nomination in 2018 as part of the team behind the documentary series Wild Wild Country.

Duplass and his brother developed a relationship with Netflix that led to a multi-picture agreement. In 2015 the streaming service signed a five-picture deal with the brothers that included titles such as Blue Jay, Take Me, Creep 2, Duck Butter and Outside In; that arrangement was refreshed with an additional four-film deal in 2018.

Music and writing

Before focusing full time on film and television, Duplass was active in music. He sang with a power-pop trio called Volcano, I’m Still Excited!, and later released solo material, including an album titled Small Hands. When tendinitis in both arms affected his ability to play guitar, he studied composition at City College of New York and shifted to playing organ to continue his musical pursuits.

Mark and Jay also authored a book together titled Like Brothers, which reflects on their relationship and their creative partnership.

Public profile

Duplass’s physical presence is listed at about 6 feet tall (183 cm) with light brown hair and brown eyes. He is publicly known for his collaborative film work with his brother and for blending roles as creator and performer across independent film and television. His work has earned festival prizes and industry recognition, including awards for The Puffy Chair early in his career and nominations for later television and documentary projects.

Personal life

Mark Duplass is married to actress and filmmaker Katie Aselton. The couple wed on August 26, 2006, and have two daughters: Ora, born December 24, 2007, and Molly, born in 2012. Duplass has cited non-vegetarian food preferences in biographical listings.

Latest updates

In addition to acting and producing, Duplass has appeared in commercial work, including a Wealthsimple advertisement in early 2018.
