Early life and background

Savinder Kaur was born on 12 January 1957 in Delhi into a Sikh family. Shortly after her birth her parents relocated to Yamuna Nagar, and she was later adopted by relatives Gurmukh Singh and Madan Kaur of Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. She attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Waverley, Mussoorie, and later enrolled at Daulat Ram College in Delhi, though she did not complete her degree. From a young age she was noted as a strong student.

Career

Savinder married Hardev Singh on 14 November 1975 during the 28th Annual Nirankari Sant Samagam in Delhi. When her husband became the spiritual head of the Sant Nirankari Mission in 1980, she began to be addressed within the community by the honorific Pujya Mata Savinder. Following Hardev Singh’s death in 2016, she succeeded him as the fifth spiritual head of the Sant Nirankari Mission on 18 May 2016, becoming the movement’s first woman leader in that role.

As head of the mission she led spiritual activities associated with the organization until she stepped down from that role when her youngest daughter, Sudiksha, succeeded her on 16 July 2018. During her leadership she remained based at the Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhawan in Sant Nirankari Colony, Burari, Delhi.

Public profile

Mata Savinder was known within the Nirankari community for her role as a spiritual guide and for continuing the work of the mission after her husband’s passing. In late July 2018 she received the Supreme Spiritual Icon Of The Year award from the Global Order of Dignitaries and Philanthropists (G.O.D.) at an event in Kolkata.
