Matthew Hayden is a former Australian international cricketer known for his powerful left-handed batting, a long Test career that included a world-class 10

Early life and background

Matthew Lawrence Hayden was born on 29 October 1971 in Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia. Raised in a regional Queensland town, he developed a passion for cricket from an early age and went on to represent his state and country at the highest levels.

Career

Hayden began his professional journey with Queensland, making an immediate impact in first-class cricket. He debuted in List A and first-class cricket in the early 1990s and earned international selection soon after. His One-Day International debut came against England at Old Trafford on 19 May 1993, and his Test debut followed against South Africa at The Wanderers on 4 March 1994. Hayden also played T20 internationals, making his T20I debut versus England at The Rose Bowl on 13 June 2005.

A left-handed opening batsman and occasional right-arm medium pacer, Hayden established himself as one of the most feared openers of his era. He was a key member of Australia’s batting line-up across formats and wore the number 28 jersey for Australia and in the Indian Premier League. Hayden’s Test statistics include 8,625 runs from 103 matches at an average of 50.73, including 30 centuries. In ODIs he scored 6,133 runs from 161 matches at an average of 43.80. In T20 internationals he compiled 308 runs in nine matches at an average of 51.33 and a strike rate of 144.

One of the defining years of his career came during the 2001 Test series against India, when he scored 549 runs in three Tests at an average of 109.8, performances that cemented his place at the top of the order. On 10 October 2003 at the WACA in Perth, Hayden produced a marathon innings of 380 runs in a single Test innings against Zimbabwe, a score that briefly stood as the highest Test total by an Australian and earned record recognition.

Hayden’s domestic and franchise cricket included spells with Queensland, Northamptonshire, Hampshire, Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, Warne Warriors, ICC World XI and Australian Legends XI. In the 2009 IPL season he won the Orange Cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 572 runs. He also featured in two Big Bash League seasons for Brisbane Heat.

Hayden announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in September 2012. Over his career he received multiple honours: the Australian Sports Medal (2000), the Allan Border Medal (2002), Test Player of the Year (2002), Wisden Cricketer of the Year (2003), ICC ODI Player of the Year (2007), Member of the Order of Australia (2010), induction into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame (2017), and later entry to the ICC Hall of Fame.

Public profile

Known by nicknames such as "Unit" and "Haydos," Hayden combined an aggressive batting style with a larger-than-life public presence. He was the first high-profile batsman to use the long-handle "Mongoose" bat in an IPL match, and before that he used a pink-gripped Gray-Nicolls to draw attention to breast cancer research. Hayden’s favourite shots included the pull and stepping down the track to counter pace.

Off the field, Hayden has published two cookbooks, The Complete Matthew Hayden Cookbook and The Matthew Hayden Cookbook 2, reflecting his interest in cooking. He has hosted a television show called Home Ground and worked as a professional speaker and cricket commentator. Hayden has served as an ambassador for multiple causes and campaigns: he was appointed an ambassador for World Youth Day in 2007, was named an ambassador for Mahindra Automotive Australia in 2015, and has worked with the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. He has also supported Parent Project Australia, a charity focused on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Personal life

Hayden married Kellie Hayden on 5 March 2005. The couple have three children: a daughter, Grace (born 2002), and two sons, Joshua (born 2005) and Thomas Joseph (born 2007). His parents are Laurie and Moya Hayden. He lists hobbies such as cooking, fishing and surfing, and has described himself as a devout Christian from childhood.

Incidents and controversies

Hayden’s career included a few notable incidents that attracted media attention. In a Sydney Test in 2003 he was fined after breaking a pavilion window in protest at a dismissal decision. He was a witness in the 2008 on-field dispute between teammates and opponents in a series involving India, and was charged under a code of conduct for language used during that episode. Hayden also made comments critical of certain playing conditions during a tour of India that generated controversy.

Later activities and injuries

After retirement he continued to be visible in cricket and public life, taking on ambassadorships and media work. In 2013 he was appointed by the Queensland Government to promote tourism in India. In 2018 Hayden sustained spinal injuries in a surfing accident at Stradbroke Island while with his son Joshua; he has remained involved in charity work and public engagements since retiring from competitive cricket.
