Maulana Badruddin Ajmal Biography

Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is an Indian politician, industrialist and philanthropist from Assam. Founder and president of the All India United DemocraticFront

Early life and background
Badruddin Ajmal was born in the village of Ali Nagar in what is today Hojai district (formerly part of Nagaon), Assam. He received formal religious education at Darul Uloom Deoband, earning a Fazil-e-Deoband qualification, a postgraduate-level credential in Islamic theology and Arabic. He grew up in a family connected to business: his father, Haji Ajmal Ali, left farming to build the Ajmal perfume brand and associated enterprises, which later became a family business.

Career
Ajmal has combined business, social work and electoral politics over several decades. He and his family expanded the Ajmal Group of Companies into multiple sectors, including fragrance, textiles and related businesses, and run companies such as Ajmal Fragrances and Fashions Private Limited, Ajmal Holding and Investments Private Limited, Belleza Enterprises Limited, Happy Nest Developers Private Limited, Al-Majid Distillation and Processing Private Limited, and Ajmal Biotech Private Limited.

He entered active politics in 2005 by forming the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF), which he later relaunched as the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) ahead of the 2009 general election. The party established a foothold quickly: AUDF won ten seats in the 2006 Assam assembly elections just months after it was formed, and later elections saw growth in its representation.

Ajmal has been elected to both the Assam Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha. In 2006 he won assembly elections from two constituencies, South Salmara and Jamunamukh, and served as an MLA until 2009. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Dhubri in 2009 and subsequently retained that seat in 2014 and 2019. During his parliamentary tenure he served as the parliamentary leader of his party and participated on multiple committees, including the Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, consultative committees for ministries such as Development of the North Eastern Region, and a committee on protocol norms and conduct of government officers with members of the Lok Sabha. He was also named a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Global Warming and Climate Change.

Public profile
Ajmal’s public profile rests on three pillars: his role as a politician, his standing as a businessman connected to a high-profile fragrance brand, and his philanthropic activities. His family operates social-welfare institutions through organizations such as the Ajmal Foundation and Markazul Ma’arif, and the family has established medical and educational facilities, including a large charitable hospital described as a 500-bed facility.

He has been included several times in The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre list of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in recognition of his philanthropic and development-related work.

Personal life
Ajmal is married to Rezwana Ajmal. The couple married on 30 December 1979 and have seven children—two of his sons, Abdur Rahim Ajmal and Abdur Rehman Ajmal, are noted as active in politics. His parents were Haji Ajmal Ali and Mariamunessa. He is one of several siblings involved in family business and public life, including brothers Mohammad Sirajuddin Ajmal, Mohammad Amir Uddin Ajmal Ali, Fakhruddin Ajmal and Abdulla Ajmal.

Controversies and public incidents
Ajmal has been involved in several incidents that attracted public attention and media coverage. These include a 2017 episode in which a journalist lodged a complaint after a confrontation at a press conference; remarks he made in 2019 about Assam’s two-child norm for government jobs that drew criticism; a disputed episode in 2020 involving claims about slogans at an airport reception; and a 2020 FIR filed against the Ajmal Foundation alleging receipt of foreign funds linked to proscribed groups, which he publicly denied and described as politically motivated while calling for a high-level probe.

Latest updates
As of the most recent information, Ajmal continues to head the AIUDF and represents Dhubri in the Lok Sabha. His political party retained parliamentary presence in Assam across multiple election cycles, and his family businesses and charitable institutions remain active in the region.
