Early life and background

Mayank Markande was born on 11 November 1997 in Bathinda, Punjab, and grew up in Patiala. Raised in a middle-class family, he attended Yadavindra Public School in Patiala. His father, Bikram Sharma, worked as a government employee with the Chief Electrical Inspector Office at Patiala, and his mother, Sandeep Sharma, ran a boutique. From a young age Markande was drawn to cricket and spent time studying the bowling of established spinners as he developed his own game.

Markande began formal training at age eight when he joined the NICS Academy in Patiala, where he worked under coach Mahesh Inder Singh. He initially bowled medium pace but was steered toward leg-spin by his coaches. At around 13 he came to the attention of former domestic cricketer and coach Munish Bali, who invited him for trials and later became an important mentor in his development.

Career

Markande progressed through age-group and representative sides for Punjab and India. He played for India Under-19s and went on to appear for India Under-23s, India A, India B, India C, India Green, and the India Emerging Team, as well as an Indian Board President's XI. Domestically he represented Punjab across formats and made his T20 debut for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 14 January 2018.

His List A debut came on 7 February 2018 for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he picked up three wickets. Later that year he was selected for India’s Emerging team for the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and took 12 wickets in four matches. In November 2018 Markande made his first-class debut for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy; he scored a half-century and took a five-wicket haul in that match, and went on to finish as his team’s leading wicket-taker in the competition with 28 dismissals in six matches.

Markande’s domestic performances earned him IPL and international opportunities. In the 2018 Indian Premier League auction he was bought by Mumbai Indians and on debut in the tournament took three wickets, including a prized dismissal. He continued to feature in Deodhar Trophy squads, representing India B and later India C in subsequent seasons. A strong showing for India A, including a five-wicket performance against England Lions in February 2019, led to his selection in India’s T20 International squad for the series against Australia; he made his T20 international debut on 24 February 2019 in Visakhapatnam.
