Early life and background

Mayank Tewari was born on 8 July 1981 in Nainital, Uttarakhand, and spent his formative years in Delhi. He attended Don Bosco School in Delhi and later studied at the Delhi College of Arts and Commerce. Raised in a family with a government-employed father and a homemaker mother, Tewari grew up with at least one sibling, a brother named Nishit Tewari.

He developed an early interest in writing, poetry and the arts. Those creative pursuits would later shape his transition from journalism to the film world.

Career

Tewari began his professional life as an investigative journalist. He worked with several Indian publications, including The Pioneer, Hindustan Times, DNA and Asian Age. In 2008 he moved to Mumbai and continued his journalism work for about two years before shifting his focus toward film and performance.

While in Mumbai he performed at open-mic events and did stand-up comedy at local clubs and bars. His spoken-word and poetry performances brought him to the attention of director Amit Masurkar, who invited him to write dialogue for the 2011 film Ragini MMS. That opportunity marked his first credited work in film as a dialogue writer.

Tewari made his dual debut as an actor and as a screenwriter with the 2014 film Sulemani Keeda, directed by Amit Masurkar. He played a pivotal on-screen role in the film and also contributed to its writing. After that release, he spent a couple of years searching for further acting roles and faced professional setbacks that affected his mental health. During this period Amit Masurkar encouraged him to return to writing.

He subsequently co-wrote Newton, a film featuring Rajkummar Rao, Raghubir Yadav, Pankaj Tripathi and Anjali Patil. Newton became India’s official submission for the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars in 2018 and earned Tewari recognition: he received the Best Screenplay Award at the 12th Asian Film Awards.

Tewari has also been credited as a co-writer on The Accidental Prime Minister, collaborating with Vijay Ratnakar Gutte and Jody Medland. His film work thus spans dialogue writing, screenplay credits and on-screen performance.

Public profile

Tewari’s professional range includes roles as an actor, writer, screenplay writer and journalist. Physically, his listed height is approximately 173 cm (1.73 m or 5'8") and his weight about 80 kg (175 lbs). His appearance is described with black eyes and black hair and approximate body measurements are provided in some profiles.

On a personal level he is married to Sheebani Sethi; the pair wed in 2014. As of the latest available information there are no children listed. Tewari’s interests beyond film and journalism include writing, poetry, photography and travel. He has cited favorite writers such as T.S. Eliot, E.B. White, Henri Lefebvre, Rahul Sankrityayan and Nikhil Sachan.

Latest updates

Highlights in Tewari’s recent career include his co-writing work on Newton, which brought him international recognition and an Asian Film Awards Best Screenplay win, and his contribution to The Accidental Prime Minister. After an earlier period working with the Delhi-based band Menwhopause as a manager and performing as a stand-up comic, he has settled into screenwriting and occasional acting projects.

He continues to be associated with Amit Masurkar’s circle, the director who first brought him into film writing and who supported his career through difficult periods.
