Early life and background

Mayur Vakani was born on 26 August 1976 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Raised in a family connected to the performing arts, he began appearing on stage at a very young age and developed his craft through school and college in Ahmedabad. He completed his schooling at Kameshwar High School and went on to graduate from C. N. College of Fine Arts. His formal training includes a master’s degree in Indian Culture and diplomas in sculpture and drama.

Career

Vakani’s roots are in Gujarati theatre, where he began performing at around six years old and continued to take on small roles as he matured. He expanded into film with a role in the Gujarati movie Ek Var Piyu Ne Malva Aavje in 2006, and two years later he reached a national television audience.

In 2008 Vakani joined the cast of the Hindi sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, portraying Sundarlal, the brother of Daya Jethalal Gada. The part brought him widespread recognition; the series aired on SAB TV and featured several familial connections from his own life, including his real sister appearing on the show and his father making guest appearances.

Alongside acting, Vakani has maintained a parallel career as a sculptor. His sculptural work has been publicly exhibited and used in significant events: one of his pieces was displayed during a Republic Day Parade in Delhi, and he produced a sculpture of Narendra Modi that was later auctioned. In 2023, the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd engaged Vakani and his team to create the largest Asiatic lion pride sculpture for Ambardi Safari Park at Khodiyar Dam in Dhari, Gujarat.
