Early life and background

Medha Patkar was born on 1 December 1954 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She grew up in a family with a background in public service and activism; her father was involved in labour union work and her mother worked in the postal service. Patkar completed a bachelor’s degree in science at Ruia College, Mumbai, and went on to earn a Master’s in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). She also pursued doctoral studies at TISS in the area of economic development and its social impacts.

Her early exposure to social issues deepened while she was a student: a study visit to villages in the Narmada valley motivated her to take up the cause of people affected by large dams and displacement. NAPM’s agenda has included campaigns on rehabilitation, land rights, public distribution systems, employment guarantees and environmental protection.

The NBA’s work under Patkar’s guidance also included education initiatives and local development projects. Since 1992 the NBA has supported ‘Jeevanshala’ or ‘Life Schools’ for children from affected communities, producing thousands of graduates, and has been involved in small hydro projects and other programs intended to support livelihoods and rehabilitation.

Patkar has been active in other campaigns as well. She played a role in the movement for housing rights in Mumbai after demolitions of large numbers of homes in 2005, helping to mobilize affected communities and press for rebuilding with basic services. In 2007 she was involved in the resistance to land acquisition in Nandigram, West Bengal, where she backed local opposition to proposals for converting land into a special economic zone.

Political activity

Patkar’s public work has included direct engagement with electoral politics at times. In January 2004 members of NAPM were involved in initiating a political platform called the People’s Political Front. In January 2014 Patkar joined the Aam Aadmi Party and campaigned with the party during the Lok Sabha elections. She stood as the Aam Aadmi Party candidate for the North East Mumbai constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha election and received 8.9% of the vote. She resigned her primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party in March 2015.
