Early life and backgroundMeena Khadikar was born on 7 September 1931 in Indore, then part of Indore State in British India. She is the daughter of Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar and grew up in a family that produced several notable musicians. Meena did not receive formal schooling, and music became a defining feature of her upbringing and later life.
Career
Meena launched her professional singing career in the early 1950s. Her first recorded film song appeared in the movie Farmaish; she sang a duet with Mohammed Rafi that marked her entry into playback singing. Over the next decade she continued to record for films, including duets with Mohammed Rafi in Pilpili Saheb and a performance opposite her sister Lata Mangeshkar in the 1957 film Mother India.
Although she is often remembered for her film work, Meena Khadikar made a lasting contribution to children’s music in Marathi. She wrote and produced a children’s album titled Asawa Sunder Chocolatecha Bungla, which was later adapted and recorded in Bengali and Gujarati. The original recordings for that collection featured her own children.
Meena’s active career as a singer spanned from 1952 until around 2000. Beyond performing, she also wrote biographical and personal reflections about her family.
