Meenakshi Seshadri was born Shashikala Seshadri on 16 November 1963 in Sindri, Jharkhand, into a Tamil family. She grew up in Sindri and attended Carmel Convent School in New Delhi. From a young age she trained seriously in classical dance, studying Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and Odissi under teachers including Vempati Chinna Satyam and Jaya Rama Rao.
