Meera Chopra was born on 8 July 1983 in Delhi and raised in a Punjabi family. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in English Honours and went on to earn a master's degree in Mass Communication from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan. After finishing her post-graduate studies she worked in New York in the marketing department at Verizon, and later returned to India to work as a programming executive at NDTV in Delhi.

Meera began her acting career in South Indian cinema, initially using the stage name Nila for her early work in Tamil films. Her first Tamil film role was in Anbe Aaruyire (2005). She went on to appear in a range of Tamil titles including Lee (2007), Jaganmohini (2009) and Killadi (2015). Meera also established a presence in Telugu cinema with films such as Bangaram (2006), Vaana (2008), Maaro (2011) and Greeku Veerudu (2013.
