Meghna Singh Biography
Right-arm medium pacer Meghna Singh rose from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh to India colours through persistence, disciplined training and strong domestic showings
Early life and backgroundMeghna Singh was born on 18 June 1994 in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in a family with strong ties to public service: her father, Vijay Singh, worked as a security guard at Dwarikesh Sugar Industries in Bareilly, and her mother, Reena Singh, served as an ASHA worker. Meghna is one of several sisters, including Garima and Pratiksha.
From childhood she gravitated to cricket, often playing with local children. With no established girls’ team in her area, she regularly played with boys. Her family supported her early interest—her father accompanied her for long daily trips to practice at Nehru Stadium in Bijnor, a routine they maintained in both morning and evening sessions.
Career
Meghna began formal coaching in 2007 under Lakshyaraj Tyagi, a coach known for developing players in Uttar Pradesh. Tyagi noticed Meghna’s natural ability and work ethic from the start: she trained twice daily without missing sessions and quickly improved the control and consistency of her deliveries.
A right-arm medium pacer who bats right-handed in the lower order, Meghna has represented multiple domestic teams, including Uttar Pradesh Women, India A Women and the Railways women’s side. Her performances in domestic tournaments drew attention, most notably during the Women’s Senior T20 Trophy 2019–20 where her outswing bowling helped her take four wickets in a key match and finish the tournament with ten wickets overall, contributing to her team’s run to the semifinals.
Meghna’s domestic form earned her a maiden national call-up in August 2021 for India’s tour of Australia across all three formats. She made her One Day International debut against Australia at Mackay on 21 September 2021, followed by her Test debut at Carrara from 30 September to 3 October 2021. Her T20I debut came on 6 March 2022 against Pakistan at Bay Oval. She received her India debut cap from then-captain Mithali Raj.
In January 2022 Meghna was included in India’s squad for the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and was also selected for the one-off WT20I against New Zealand that preceded the tournament. In the shorter formats she has worn jersey number 16 for India.
Her domestic and franchise career continued to develop: on 9 December 2023 she was bought by Gujarat Giants in the 2024 Women’s Premier League auction for a reported fee of Rs. 30 lakh.
Playing style
Meghna bowls right-arm medium pace with notable outswing, a delivery that has troubled batters and produced key wickets at domestic level. Coaches have praised her ability to hit a consistent good length that tempts risky strokes, and they also value her lower-order batting capability—she can hold an innings together and accelerate when required.
Public profile
Meghna’s rise to the national team was a proud moment for her family, who followed her appearances on television and celebrated her selection for the World Cup. Outside cricket, she maintains a focus on fitness and is often seen training in the gym. She is known to enjoy tea and is an animal lover who shares moments with pets on social media.
Latest updates
After breaking into the India setup in 2021 and being part of the 2022 World Cup squad, Meghna continued to attract attention on the domestic and franchise circuit. Her acquisition by Gujarat Giants at the 2024 WPL auction is the most recent milestone reported in her career.
Meghna’s story remains one of steady progression: disciplined early training, strong domestic performances and gradual integration into India’s national setup have defined her journey so far.
