Early life and backgroundMehbooba Mufti Sayeed was born on 22 May 1959 in Bijbehara, Jammu and Kashmir. Raised in a politically active family, she is the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Gulshan Ara. She studied at the University of Kashmir, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts and later an LLB. Career
Mehbooba Mufti entered electoral politics in the mid-1990s. In 1996 she won a legislative assembly seat from Bijbehara running on an Indian National Congress ticket. Her father later founded the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Mehbooba became vice-president of the PDP in 1999. That same year she contested the Srinagar parliamentary seat but was defeated by Omar Abdullah.
She returned to state politics in 2002 when she was elected an MLA from Pahalgam. In 2004 she won a seat in the Lok Sabha from Anantnag, and she was again elected as Member of Parliament from Anantnag in 2014.
On 4 April 2016 she made history by becoming the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, leading a coalition government. She resigned from that post on 19 June 2018 after the coalition partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party, withdrew its support.
After a period away from frontline office, she was re-elected as president of the People’s Democratic Party on 22 February 2021. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat she lost to National Conference candidate Mian Altaf Ahmad.
