Early life and backgroundMehran Karimi Nasseri was born in 1945 in Masjed Soleiman, in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company area of Iran. His father, Abdelkarim, worked as a doctor; his mother, Simon, is described as having been a nurse from Scotland. He grew up in a large family with four brothers and two sisters, several of whom pursued professional careers in fields such as dentistry, banking, chemistry and broadcasting. His father died in 1967 when Nasseri was in his early twenties.
Nasseri later moved with his family to Tehran after his father retired. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom, earning a bachelor's degree in Yugoslav studies in 1976.
Career
Nasseri is best known as an activist and for his autobiographical work. After claiming refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Belgium, he lived and worked in Europe for several years, including a period in Brussels where he worked in a library, continued his studies and received social assistance.
A series of events in the late 1970s and 1980s—including a disputed loss of documents—left Nasseri effectively without recognized travel papers. In 1988, after difficulties at airports and problems establishing legal residence in the countries where he sought asylum, he took up a prolonged residence at Terminal 1 of Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport. He remained a highly visible figure there from August 26, 1988, until he was hospitalized in July 2006.
While based at the airport he spent much of his time reading, writing a diary and studying economics. Airport staff and visitors occasionally provided him with food, newspapers and assistance, and his makeshift sleeping area was described in contemporary reports as little more than two benches pushed together.
Legal efforts to resolve his status continued over many years. A French court in 1992 ruled that he had entered France legally and could not be expelled from the airport, but it also concluded that he could not be admitted to the country. Belgian authorities later offered supervised residence under certain conditions in 1995, and at times France and Belgium listed him as an Iranian national on official documents; Nasseri refused to sign some residency papers when those documents did not reflect the identity he preferred.
Public profile
Nasseri’s life attracted steady media attention and inspired multiple creative works. He coauthored an autobiography, The Terminal Man, published in 2004 with British writer Andrew Donkin. His story was cited as an influence on the 2004 feature film The Terminal; his life also inspired the 1993 French film Lost in Transit and the English-language opera Flight by Jonathan Dove. Documentaries, short films and other pieces—such as Waiting for Godot at De Gaulle, Sir Alfred of Charles De Gaulle Airport and The Fifteen-Year Layover—examined various aspects of his story.
In 2003, DreamWorks reportedly acquired the rights to his life story and an amount was paid for those rights. Accounts in the press noted that Nasseri followed developments around The Terminal closely, and he was sometimes seen interacting with publicity material for the film.
Personal life
Nasseri lived much of his adult life apart from the family home and was unmarried. During his years in public view he maintained simple routines: reading, studying and writing, and he had modest preferences for food and tobacco noted in contemporary reports. He had been granted refugee status by the UNHCR in Belgium, and over time authorities in France and Belgium engaged with his case repeatedly. After a long stay in the airport terminal he was hospitalized in mid-2006, later spent time in a hotel near the airport, and in March 2007 was transferred to an Emmaus charity reception centre. From 2008 until his death he lived in a Paris shelter.
Latest updates
Mehran Karimi Nasseri died on 12 November 2022 at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. He was 76 years old. Reports indicated the cause of death as a heart attack. At the time of his death, he had again been present at the airport in the weeks immediately before he died.
Legacy
Nasseri’s circumstances raised broader questions about statelessness, identity and the intersections of immigration systems and humanitarian law. His long-term public presence at a major international airport made his story familiar around the world and led to sustained artistic and journalistic interest that spanned decades.
