Michael Clarke Biography

Michael John Clarke is a former Australian international cricketer known for his elegant batting, leadership of the national side, and standout Test record

Early life and background

Michael John Clarke was born on April 2, 1981, in Liverpool, Australia, and grew up in Breakfast Point, New South Wales. He attended Westfields Sports High School and was raised in a family that included his father Les Clarke, his mother Debbie Clarke, and a sister, Leanne. Clarke’s childhood and upbringing in New South Wales set the stage for a professional career in cricket.

Career

Clarke made his international One Day International debut for Australia on January 19, 2003, against England and later played his first Test on October 6, 2004, against India. He represented New South Wales at the domestic level and wore jersey number 63 for the state side. Internationally he wore number 23 for Australia. His domestic and franchise career also included stints with Hampshire, Sydney Thunder, and the Indian Premier League side Pune Warriors India.

On the field Clarke developed a reputation as a composed presence, often described as calm in his approach to batting and leadership. He favored the straight drive and had a particular liking for contests against England. Clarke’s fielding was notable as well; he was known for fast, accurate throws and for his athleticism around the ground.

His batting achievements include an exceptional run of form in 2012 when he became the only Test batsman that year to score four double centuries. That period of high performance was followed by recognition at the annual ICC awards: Clarke won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy as Cricketer of the Year in 2013 and was also named Test Cricketer of the Year for 2013.

Clarke experienced the highs and lows common to elite sport. One documented on-field controversy involved a verbal exchange with South African fast bowler Dale Steyn in March 2014; Clarke later issued an apology both publicly and personally to Steyn. He also endured deep personal loss when fellow Australian cricketer Phil Hughes was fatally struck during a match in November 2014—Clarke delivered an emotional speech at Hughes’s funeral and was visibly affected by the tragedy.

Public profile

Off the field, Clarke cultivated a public image tied to sport, style, and family. He has been associated with a number of nicknames including Clarkey, Eminem, Pup, Nemo, and Top Dog. Physically, Clarke is 175 cm tall (5 feet 9 inches), with light brown hair and blue eyes. He bears several tattoos, including a large design on his right shoulder and biceps and an Arabic-script tattoo on his left forearm.

Clarke has spoken about personal interests and favorites, including a fondness for music by Jon Bon Jovi, fast cars, and spending time at the beach. He has cited actors and films he prefers—Denzel Washington as a favorite actor and the movie Remember the Titans among his preferred films—and enjoys creature comforts such as his mother’s rissoles. Clarke lists his favorite colour as red and has been pictured with a collection of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Personal life

Clarke’s personal life has been followed closely by the public. He married Kyly in May 2012; the marriage ended in divorce in 2020. The couple share a daughter, Kelsey Lee Clarke. Before his marriage Clarke had a public relationship with model Lara Bingle in 2010. Clarke’s coaches and mentors over the years have included Darren Lehmann and Mickey Arthur.

Financial and property notes

In September 2021 Clarke purchased a five-bedroom residence in Vaucluse, New South Wales. His playing contracts and match fees while active were reported in published summaries that assigned specific per-match figures for Tests, One-Day Internationals, and T20s, and noted a multi-million-dollar contract with Cricket Australia plus bonuses.

Latest updates

Across his career Michael Clarke combined strong Test match performances with leadership responsibilities and a high public profile. Even after retirement from regular international duties, his achievements—particularly the run of double centuries in 2012 and the ICC awards in 2013—remain key highlights of his cricketing legacy.
