Michael P. Muphy Biography

United States Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael Patrick Murphy was a decorated naval officer who led SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One and was posthumously awarded

Early life and background

Michael Patrick Murphy was born on May 7, 1976, in Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York. He grew up in the Long Island area and attended Saxton Middle School before graduating from Patchogue-Medford High School in 1994. As a youth he played soccer and participated in pee-wee football. During high school summers he worked as a lifeguard.

Murphy went on to earn dual honors degrees in political science and psychology from The Pennsylvania State University in 1998. While at Penn State he met Heather Duggan, who became his fiancée. After graduating, Murphy received admission offers from law schools but chose a naval career instead.

Career

Murphy became an officer candidate in September 2000 and completed Officer Candidate School at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned as an ensign on December 13, 2000. In January 2001 he began Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in Coronado, California, and completed the course in November 2001. He then attended Army Airborne School, finished SEAL Qualification Training, and completed SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) school. Murphy earned the SEAL Trident in July 2002 and was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One (SDVT-1) based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Murphy served in a variety of operational roles. In October 2002 he was a liaison officer during Exercise Early Victor in Jordan, and he later carried out assignments with Special Operations Command Central and deployments to Qatar and Djibouti. By 2005 he was commanding officer of the Alpha Platoon of SDVT-1, a component of SEAL Team 10, conducting missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In June 2005 Murphy's platoon was tasked with a mission in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, to locate and capture or eliminate a suspected Taliban leader. On June 28, 2005, he and three fellow SEALs were carrying out an operation in the mountains near the Pakistan–Afghanistan border when they were engaged by a large enemy force. During the fight Murphy moved from cover to establish radio contact with a nearby U.S. base so the team could request reinforcements. He was shot multiple times while making his way uphill and succeeded in notifying the base that the mission had been compromised before he died of his wounds. He was 29 years old.

Public profile

Murphy was awarded numerous military decorations. Among them are the Medal of Honor (posthumously awarded on October 22, 2007), the Purple Heart, and commendations recognizing meritorious service. His Medal of Honor made him the first U.S. Navy recipient of that decoration since the end of the Vietnam War.

His name and memory have been honored in many ways. In 2007 his name was added to the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes. Local honors in his native Long Island include the renaming of Lake Ronkonkoma Park and a Patchogue post office. The U.S. Navy named an Arleigh Burke–class guided missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112) in his honor. Educational and commemorative initiatives have been established in his name, including a memorial scholarship foundation created by his family, a memorial plaza at Penn State, the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Award in Geospatial Intelligence, and various facilities and awards around Long Island and in naval training locations dedicated to preserving his legacy.

Personal life

Murphy was engaged to Heather Duggan; the couple had met while studying at Penn State. At the time of his death he held the rank of lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and was serving with the SEALs. He is described as having been known by nicknames such as Murph and Mikey and was sometimes called "The Protector." His parents are Daniel J. Murphy and Maureen T. Murphy, and he had a brother, John D. Murphy.
