Early life and backgroundMichelle Charlene Lee was born on August 2, 1978, in Long Beach in Los Angeles County, California. Soon after her birth she was sent to Taiwan and spent her early childhood there with her grandmother, learning Chinese as her first language. She returned to Los Angeles at age five and struggled initially with English, which made her reserved as a child. Her mother encouraged her to take acting classes to build confidence and social skills.
Lee grew up in the South Bay/Torrance area of Los Angeles. Surrounded by friends involved in acting, she began performing as a child and took headshots at the age of six. In high school she discovered Wushu after seeing a performance, which led her to study the martial art; she later earned a black belt in Wushu. In addition to Mandarin and English, she has basic Spanish skills.
