Milind Chitragupth Biography
Milind Chitragupth is an Indian music composer best known as one half of the Anand–Milind composing duo. Active in Bollywood from the 1980s onward, he has—
Early life and backgroundMilind Chitragupth was born on 31 May 1959 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in a household with strong musical ties: his father, Chitragupth, was a composer and Milind and his brother Anand spent their early years around music. As a child Milind took piano lessons during summer vacations and later picked up guitar while working on documentaries and music programs.
Career
Milind began his professional journey in film music in the mid-1980s. His debut as a composer came with the 1984 film Ab Ayega Mazaa. He is widely recognized for forming the Anand–Milind duo with his brother Anand Chitragupth; together they composed for hundreds of films across the 1980s, 1990s and beyond.
The brothers were prolific through the late 1980s and 1990s, composing songs and scores for a long list of Hindi films. Some early and notable credits include Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, for which they received a Filmfare Award in 1989, and a steady stream of work through 1990 and 1991 on films such as Baaghi: A Rebel for Love, Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin, Dastoor and Prem Qaidi. Throughout the 1990s they continued to produce songs for mainstream Hindi cinema, contributing music to titles including Chandra Mukhi, Raja Babu, Jai Vikraanta and Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate.
Milind also worked individually at times. He handled music-director duties on films such as Muqaddar (1996) and Zanjeer (1998), and he contributed playback singing for films including Woh Phir Aayegi (1988) and Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001). The duo’s output crossed genre and national lines as well; they composed for the Bangladeshi film Keyamot Theke Keyamot (1993) and continued releasing film songs into the 2000s and 2010s.
By their own account, Anand and Milind composed music for roughly 250 films as a duo, handling solo responsibilities on many of those projects and providing background scores as well. Their catalog includes popular songs from 1992 such as Qaid Mein Hai Bulbul, Mere Sajana Saath Nibhana and Yaad Rakhegi Duniya. Over the years the brothers adapted to changing industry practices, noting that after 2000 filmmakers increasingly used multiple composers on a single film, which affected the volume and nature of assignments they accepted.
Public profile
Milind’s work has been recognized with awards and nominations. As part of the Anand–Milind partnership he won a Filmfare Award in 1989 for music from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, and the duo received several Filmfare nominations in the early 1990s. Later in his career he and his brother were honored with the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2022.
The pair have remained visible through occasional public appearances. In 2023 Anand and Milind appeared on a national television comedy chat show alongside other industry figures. That year a music video of a song they composed, Sapne Jo Dekhe, surpassed one million views online and the team behind the song celebrated with a success event in Mumbai.
Personal life
Milind’s family life is rooted in Mumbai. He is married and his parents are listed as Chitragupth (father) and Krishna (mother). His brother Anand is his longstanding musical partner. Beyond immediate family, interviews note relatives in government service and journalism, and Milind has described his family’s background as having a range of public-service and media connections.
