Early life and backgroundMira Nair was born on 15 October 1957 in Rourkela, Odisha, and grew up in Bhubaneswar. The daughter of Amrit Nair, a civil servant, and Parveen Nair, a social worker, she was the youngest of three children. Educated in India and abroad, Nair attended Loreto Convent in Shimla and later studied at Delhi University before winning a full scholarship to Harvard University, where she completed a B.A. in sociology.
Career
Nair began her filmmaking career with documentaries that explored social realities in India. Her early work includes the 1979 documentary Jama Masjid Street, which focused on life in Delhi’s Muslim neighborhoods. She also made documentaries such as India Cabaret and So Far From India that examined facets of Indian society.
Her feature film debut came in 1988 with Salaam Bombay!, a film that brought international attention to her work and earned numerous awards. Nair founded the production company Mirabai Films and continued to blend intimate, character-driven storytelling with broader social themes. Her films often cross cultural boundaries and feature both professional actors and non-actors cast from the communities she portrays.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s she directed and produced a string of notable films, including Mississippi Masala and Monsoon Wedding. Monsoon Wedding was particularly celebrated on the festival circuit, winning the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. Nair’s filmography also includes Vanity Fair, The Namesake, The Reluctant Fundamentalist (which she dedicated to her father), and Queen of Katwe, the latter of which incorporated non-actors from the Katwe community.
In addition to filmmaking, Nair has been involved in education and mentorship. She has taught at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and Films and established Maisha, a training program that supports emerging screenwriters in India and East Africa. She also founded the Salaam Baalak Trust (referred to here as the Salaam Balak foundation) to support street children in India following the success of Salaam Bombay!.
