Early life and backgroundGourang Chakraborty, known professionally as Mithun Chakraborty, was born on 16 June 1950 in Barisal, then part of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He pursued higher education in Kolkata, completing a degree in chemistry at Scottish Church College before training in acting at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
Career
Mithun made his film debut in 1976 with Mrigayaa, a performance that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. That early recognition marked the start of a long and varied screen career that has included work in Hindi as well as regional cinemas such as Bengali, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Telugu and Punjabi. Over decades he appeared in more than 350 films, spanning mainstream commercial fare and performances that brought further National Awards for Tahader Katha (Best Actor) and Swami Vivekananda (Best Supporting Actor).
During the late 1980s and 1990s he was among the industry’s highest-paid performers and at one point set a Limca Book of Records entry for appearing as the lead in 19 films in a single year. His on-screen dancing, most famously showcased in the era of Disco Dancer, earned him a reputation as an influential performer whose style reached a nationwide audience.
Beyond acting, Mithun has worked as a singer, producer, writer and entrepreneur. He helped found the Cine and TV Artists Association (CINTAA) in 1992 alongside peers and has been involved with brand endorsements, serving as ambassador for Panasonic in India and later for GoDaddy. He also established the Royal Bengal Tigers cricket team for the Indian Cricket League in 2007.

Mithun’s visibility extended to television when he hosted Dance Bangla Dance and contributed the concept that led to Dance India Dance. His public life has also included political engagement: he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2014 on a Trinamool Congress ticket and resigned from the upper house in December 2016. Over the years he has received numerous honors. In April 2024 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. Later in 2024 he was a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards. He is also a two-time Filmfare Award winner.

Mithun’s parents were Basantokumar and Santirani Chakraborty. His family history includes the loss of a brother in an accidental electrocution. He is married to Yogeeta Bali and is the father of four children: Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Ushmey Chakraborty, Namashi Chakraborty and Dishani Chakraborty. He is known to enjoy dancing and sports such as cricket and football.

On 10 February 2024 Mithun was hospitalized after experiencing unease and was diagnosed with an ischemic cerebrovascular stroke. He later continued to make public appearances and interviews. In May 2024 a clip from a television appearance featured him recounting a personal anecdote from earlier in his life. In October 2024 he was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
