Early life and background

Mohamed Muizzu was born on 15 June 1978 in Malé, Maldives. Raised in a Muslim family, he is the son of Shaikh Hussain Abdul Rahman, a former judge, and Husna Adam Ismail Manik. Muizzu completed advanced studies in civil and structural engineering in the United Kingdom, earning BE and ME degrees in Structural Engineering from the University of London and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Leeds. He is married to Sajidha Mohamed; the couple have three children.

Career

Muizzu began his professional life as a civil engineer in the private sector, overseeing a number of infrastructure projects in the Maldives. He entered politics in 2012 and was appointed Minister of Housing and Environment on 21 May 2012. In that role he helped advance major projects and international agreements, and was associated with initiatives such as the Sinamalé Bridge, the Malé Ring Road, Rasfannu Beach, the King Salman Grand Mosque and redevelopment of Sultan Park.

His party affiliation changed over time: he joined the Adhaalath Party in 2012, moved to the Maldives Development Alliance in 2013, and later left the MDA to join the Progressive Party of Maldives in 2019. Within the PPM he served as a vice-president and was placed in charge of the party’s Elections Department. In 2021 he ran for and won the Malé mayoralty on the PPM ticket, receiving 9,548 votes and breaking an eleven-year streak of mayoral victories by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party.

Muizzu resigned from the housing ministry on 17 November 2018. In 2023 he was nominated by the Progressive Alliance Coalition, which included the PPM and the People's National Congress, as its presidential candidate with Hussain Mohamed Latheef as running mate. In the first round of the 2023 presidential contest Muizzu received 46.06% of the vote; he won the runoff in September 2023 with 54.04% and became President of the Maldives on 17 November 2023.

Public profile

Muizzu is noted for his pro-China stance and for cultivating development partnerships with multiple international partners during his time in government. He has publicly emphasized strengthening ties with China and has been identified with projects that involved Chinese financing or participation. At the same time he led an electoral campaign that called for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives; following his election, a government decision set 15 March 2024 as the date for the withdrawal of Indian troops. In March 2024, amid diplomatic friction, he described India as ‘‘the closest ally’’ and said he did not intend to halt Indian-funded development projects.

His presidency has included foreign-policy moves and public initiatives. In June 2024 he launched a national fundraising campaign titled “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine” and announced a ban on entry for holders of Israeli passports in response to the war in Gaza.

Controversies

During the 2023 presidential campaign opposition parties levelled serious allegations related to the death of an expatriate domestic worker allegedly while Muizzu served as minister in 2012. His wife publicly denied those claims and pointed to a law-enforcement investigation that, according to her statement, did not find evidence supporting the accusations.

After taking office in November 2023, Muizzu moved to implement parts of his foreign-policy platform. The government set a date for the withdrawal of Indian troops and has pursued a louder diplomatic alignment toward China. In 2024 he launched solidarity and travel-restriction measures related to the Gaza war and remained a central figure in regional diplomatic discussions. Reports in mid-2024 also noted a curious allegation involving an arrest linked to accusations of black magic against a visiting Mauritian official; that matter was reported in connection with the administration.
