Mohammad Amir Biography

Mohammad Amir is a Pakistani fast bowler who burst onto the international scene as a teenager. Known for his pace and ability to reverse swing the ball, he

Early life and background

Mohammad Amir was born on 13 April 1992 in Gujjar Khan, Punjab, Pakistan. Raised in the same town that he lists as his hometown, Amir grew up in a large family; the licensed profile notes his mother as Naseem Akter, a brother named Mohammad Ijaz, and that he has six siblings in total. He is Pakistani by nationality and practices Islam.

Amir was identified as a talented young bowler early on. A key moment in his formative years came on Pakistan’s Under-19 tour of England, where his performance — including an eight-wicket haul on that tour — helped establish him as a fast-bowling prospect. Legendary Pakistan seamer Wasim Akram is credited with spotting his potential and later served as a mentor.

Career

Amir made his international debut in 2009 while still a teenager. His first appearance for Pakistan came in Twenty20 cricket on 7 June 2009 against England in London. That summer he progressed rapidly, making his Test debut on 4 July 2009 against Sri Lanka in Galle and his One Day International debut on 30 July 2009 versus Sri Lanka in Dambulla.

As a fast bowler, Amir drew attention for his aggression on the field and his skill with reverse swing. He wore the No. 5 jersey for Pakistan and used the same number in some franchise and county assignments. Early in his career he produced notable performances, including a six-wicket haul (6/84) at Lord’s in 2010 during the fourth Test against England. In limited-overs cricket he was part of a rare lower-order batting partnership that produced a 103-run stand for the tenth wicket in an ODI alongside Saeed Ajmal.

At the domestic and franchise level, Amir has represented Pakistan’s Under-19 side and the national team alongside stints with Chittagong Vikings and Karachi Kings, as well as playing in county and IPL competition where he also used the #5 jersey. In the Pakistan Super League he became the only bowler to take a hat-trick in a PSL match at the time, achieving the feat against Lahore Qalandars in 2016.

Amir’s international career included appearances across formats through 2019 and 2020. His last Test match was played on 11 January 2019 versus South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium. His final ODI appearance came on 2 October 2019 against Sri Lanka at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, and his last T20 international outing was on 30 August 2020 against England at Emirates Old Trafford. On 17 December 2020 he announced his retirement from international cricket.

Personal profile and public image

Off the field, Amir is described as someone who enjoys listening to music and lists chicken as a favorite food. He admires Hashim Amla as a batsman and Wasim Akram as a bowler, and counts film actor Shaan Shahid among his favorite actors. Physically, he is listed at approximately 1.88 meters (6 feet 2 inches) in height, with black hair and black eyes.

Amir’s career has been marked by both rapid success and controversy. In 2010 he was implicated in a spot-fixing case and received a five-year ban from cricket related to those findings. After serving the suspension, he returned to domestic cricket in 2015 and resumed his professional career.

Family and personal life

Amir is married to Narjis Khatun. The profile lists his mother and one brother by name; other family members are referenced more generally. His zodiac sign is Aries.
