Mohammad Hafeez Biography
Former Pakistan allrounder Mohammad Hafeez enjoyed a long international career across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. A right‑handed batter and off‑break bowler, he
Early life and backgroundMohammad Hafeez was born on 17 October 1980 in Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. He studied at the University of Sargodha and later made Lahore his hometown and base. Known by nicknames such as "Professor" in cricketing circles, Hafeez emerged from Pakistan’s domestic system to become one of the country’s prominent allrounders.
Career
Hafeez made his international debut in 2003, appearing in ODIs, Tests and later T20Is. His ODI debut came on 3 April 2003 against Zimbabwe at Sharjah, his Test debut followed on 20 August 2003 against Bangladesh at Karachi’s National Stadium, and he played his first T20 international on 28 August 2006 against England at Bristol.
A right‑handed batter who also bowled right‑arm offbreak, Hafeez built a long and varied career for Pakistan. In Tests he played 55 matches, scoring 3,652 runs with a highest score of 224 and compiling ten centuries. In 218 ODIs he amassed 6,614 runs, including 11 centuries and a highest unbeaten 140. In 119 T20 internationals he scored 2,514 runs with a highest of 99 not out. Across formats he was frequently used as a top‑order batter and provided useful overs with his offspin.
As a bowler his international returns include 53 Test wickets, 139 ODI wickets and 61 T20I wickets. His records list several notable achievements: he became one of a handful of players to score more than 1,000 runs and take 30 or more wickets in ODIs in a calendar year, and he is among Pakistan’s leading run‑scorers in T20 internationals. He holds distinctions in T20Is for caught‑and‑bowled dismissals and for being one of Pakistan’s most awarded players in player‑of‑the‑match and player‑of‑the‑series counts.
Hafeez’s career featured several standout performances. He formed a record opening partnership of 224 with Nasir Jamshed in the 2012 Asia Cup, and he produced his highest Test score of 196 against Sri Lanka in Colombo that same year. In December 2013 he recorded three centuries in an ODI series, joining an elite list of batters with that achievement. In T20 cricket he narrowly missed a century when he finished 99 not out against New Zealand in December 2020, and in July 2021 he produced an exceptionally economical four‑over spell in a T20I against the West Indies.
Leadership roles and later international years
Hafeez was named Pakistan’s T20 captain and served as vice‑captain in ODIs and Tests under Misbah‑ul‑Haq from 2012. Under his T20 leadership Pakistan recorded notable series wins and reached second place in the ICC T20 rankings. He resigned the T20 captaincy after Pakistan’s exit from the 2014 World T20. In subsequent years his international form fluctuated, and he experienced both selection recalls and periods on the sidelines. He was part of Pakistan’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup and was selected for the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.
Domestic and franchise cricket
Hafeez played extensively in domestic and franchise leagues. His domestic affiliations and franchise stints include teams such as Middlesex, Melbourne Stars, Kolkata Knight Riders, Peshawar Zalmi, Lahore Qalandars and many others across Pakistan, England, Australia, the Caribbean and T20 leagues in other countries. In the inaugural years of the Pakistan Super League he represented Peshawar Zalmi and left the franchise after three seasons; he was signed by them for US$70,000 during one auction.
Public profile
Off the field, Hafeez’s preferences have been noted: he has cited Imran Khan as a favorite cricketer, enjoys golf, and has named classical and playback singers among his musical influences. He is married to Nazia Hafeez and the couple have two children, a son and a daughter. Standing around 1.73 m (5'8"), Hafeez has been recognizable for his dark brown eyes and black hair.
Like many long‑serving international players, his career also encountered controversy. His bowling action was scrutinized by the ICC in 2017 and he had been suspended in earlier years for issues related to his action. He also missed the 2015 World Cup because of a calf injury.
Latest updates
Hafeez reached the milestone of 100 T20 internationals in April 2021 and remained part of Pakistan’s squads into late 2021, including selection for the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. In June 2020 he tested positive for COVID‑19 before subsequently returning a negative test. Even in the final years of his international career he produced noteworthy performances, including the 99 not out in New Zealand and the economical T20 spell against the West Indies.
