Early life and background

Mohammad Hussamuddin was born on 12 February 1994 in Nizamabad, Telangana. He grew up in a family with a strong boxing tradition: his father, Mohammad Shamsuddin, is a former Indian boxer and a coach, and several of his brothers have pursued the sport professionally. Hussamuddin originally trained as a gymnast, but when his coach moved away his father introduced him to boxing. He has said that he was initially afraid of taking hits in training, and that his father’s coaching helped him overcome that fear.

At a young age Hussamuddin began competing in the national junior circuit. By fifteen he was already entering tournaments, and in 2009 he won a bronze medal at the Junior Nationals in Aurangabad. That same period saw him relocate for more intensive preparation, including a stint training in Havana, Cuba arranged by his father.

Career

Hussamuddin made his international debut in 2012 at the Tammer Tournament in Finland, and also competed that year at the Youth World Championships in Yerevan, Armenia. He fights from a southpaw stance and competes in the men’s featherweight (approximately 56 kg) category.

Over the next decade he accumulated a steady stream of international results. His medal record includes bronze medals at the 2009 Junior Nationals (Aurangabad), the 2015 Military World Games in South Korea, the 2017 Ulaanbaatar Cup (Mongolia), the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, and the 2020 Cologne Boxing World Cup. He has also taken silver at events such as the 2011 Youth Nationals in Kakinada, the 2017 Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria, and several European tournaments in 2019. Hussamuddin won gold at the 2016 Senior Nationals in Guwahati and at the 2018 Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany, and he has medalled at multiple other international opens and memorial tournaments.

Hussamuddin represented India at major multi-sport events as well: he competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he won a bronze medal in the men’s 56 kg category, and he took part in the 2019 Asian Games in Jakarta. He was part of India’s boxing squad at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, reaching the later stages of the competition.
