Mohammed Ashiq was born on 24 November 1998 in Mangaluru, Karnataka, and grew up in a family where food and home cooking played a central role. He began learning to cook while in seventh grade, and his early efforts won praise from family and friends. Ashiq attended Milagres High School in Mangaluru and completed his formal education through high school.

Financial constraints affected his plans to study hotel management after school, and instead he took up work to support himself and his family. In the late 2010s he opened a small juice shop called Kulukki Hub, where he experimented with different preparations and sharpened his cooking skills in a practical setting.

Career

Ashiq built his culinary résumé through local work and regional competitions before moving onto televised contests. In 2020 he won the inaugural season of Master Class Chef of the Year on Namma TV, a regional cooking reality show. He later auditioned for MasterChef India Season 7 but did not progress past the auditions.

Undeterred, Ashiq returned to audition for MasterChef India Season 8. He secured a place on the show after presenting a signature Fish Fry prepared in Mangalorean style. Across the season his regional sensibilities and use of seafood and local ingredients stood out, and his performances earned praise from the judges.

In the 2023 finale he competed against fellow finalists Suraj Thapa, Rukhsaar Sayeed, and Nambie Jessica Marak and emerged as the winner of MasterChef India Season 8. His final menu included a signature dish he called Ocean View, which he described as his best signature creation. For his victory he received a cash award of Rs 25 lakh.

On the show Ashiq was given the nickname Mangalorian Maverick Chef, a tag that reflected his regional roots and inventive approach to flavours.
