Early life and backgroundMohit Chauhan was born on 11 March 1966 in Nahan, a town in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Raised in a Rajput family, he developed an interest in music from an early age. He attended St. Xavier's School in Delhi and went on to study at Dharamsala College in Himachal Pradesh, where he completed a Master of Science in Geology.
While in college his musical interest deepened and he formed his first band, The Hijackers. A move to Delhi in 1993 led to the formation of the band Silk Route with Arpit Gupta. Silk Route and its music marked the start of Chauhan's public recognition as a singer.
Career
Chauhan first came to attention with Silk Route's 1998 album Boondein, which included the popular track Dooba Dooba. That success helped open doors for him in the Indian music scene and later in film music.
His first recorded contribution to a Bollywood soundtrack came with the song Pehli Nazar Mein Dari Thi from the 2002 film Road. A chance meeting with composer A. R. Rahman at an awards function eventually led to a film opportunity five years later: Chauhan sang Khoon Chala for Rang De Basanti (2006), which brought him further recognition in the film industry.
He became a household name after the song Tum Se Hi from Jab We Met (2007). Beyond Hindi cinema, Chauhan has recorded songs in other Indian languages: his first Bengali film assignment was for Sedin Dekha Hoyechilo, and his first Tamil song was Po Nee Po for the film 3. He has also sung for a Himachali film, Saanjh (2016).
In addition to playback singing, Chauhan has recorded numerous commercial jingles for major brands, including Nescafe, Wheel detergent, Parachute, and Maruti Suzuki Alto. His contributions to film music have been recognized with two Filmfare Awards for Best Playback Singer: for Masakali from Delhi-6 and Jo Bhi Main from Rockstar.

Mohit Chauhan married journalist and poetess Prarthna Gehlot on 29 June 2012 at a hotel in Barog, Solan, Himachal Pradesh. His parents are B.K. Rana and Krishna Rana. He has a brother, Rohit Chauhan, who is an officer in the Himachal Administrative Service, and a sister, Parul Chandel. Chauhan keeps pets and is an animal lover; he has a dog named Ginger.
He stood out for community-minded messages about animal welfare, urging compassion and care for community animals. He has acknowledged personal habits such as smoking and drinking, and lists travelling and guitar playing among his hobbies.
Honors and appointments
