Mohit Mohindra Biography

Mohit Mohindra is an Indian lawyer-turned-politician from Patiala who rose through the ranks of the Youth Congress to become President of the Punjab Youth

Early life and background

Mohit Mohindra was born on 1 October 1991 in Patiala, Punjab. He grew up in a family active in public life; his father is veteran Congress leader Brahm Mohindra and his mother is Harpreet Mohindra. Mohit completed a BA LLB in 2014 from Punjabi University, Patiala, and is enrolled with the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana and the National Company Law Tribunal in his professional capacity as a lawyer.

From an early age he showed strong interest in sport. He captained Punjab’s Under-15 cricket team that won the Polly Umrigar Trophy in 2005–06, later led the Under-17 side to a runner-up finish in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2007–08, and played in Punjab’s Under-22 cricket team.

Career

Mohindra entered mainstream politics through the Indian National Congress. His organisational journey began at the local level as Secretary of the Youth Congress in Patiala in 2016. He subsequently served as State General Secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress and was assigned as Wing In-charge for the Bathinda parliamentary constituency.

In 2019 he sought a Congress ticket for the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat but was not allotted the nomination. He later contested the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Patiala Rural constituency, where he was defeated by Dr Balbir Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party by a margin of 53,474 votes.

Mohindra’s standing within the Youth Congress grew, and in 2021 he was appointed Vice President of the Punjab Youth Congress. In PYC internal elections held in 2023 he secured a decisive mandate, winning 240,600 votes out of 451,550 polled. He took charge as President of the Punjab Youth Congress on 24 August 2023, succeeding Barinder Dhillon. During his oath-taking remarks he committed that the newly elected office-bearers would concentrate on organisational work for the next three and a half years rather than immediately seeking election tickets.

Aside from party roles, Mohit Mohindra has held a position with the Fencing Association of India as a vice president, reflecting an involvement in sports administration in addition to his political and legal careers.
