Early life and background

Monisha Jaising was born on 24 May 1966 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She attended Bai Avabai F. Petit Girls' High School in Mumbai and went on to study fashion in London, earning a Bachelor of Fashion Design in 1989 from the American College for the Applied Arts (now part of American InterContinental University) and an honours degree in Fashion Illustration from the Royal College of Art.

Her father, Narain Bhojwani, had an artistic bent and an interest in architecture and interior design, influences Monisha has acknowledged as formative. She began exploring design at a young age, creating march-past outfits for her school and later participating in exhibitions while studying and living in London.

Career

Monisha Jaising launched her label and became one of the early designers to sell through Ensemble, an influential multi-brand concept store in Mumbai. That initial retail opportunity helped establish her as a presence in Indian fashion; she later opened a flagship store in Bandra West, Mumbai. Over the years she built Monisha Jaising Luxuries LLP and took on roles including director of Azzura International Fashions Private Limited.

Her design signature blends Indian inspiration with contemporary cuts, architectural lines, inventive prints and detailed embroidery. Monisha is credited with updating the traditional kurta, bringing modern tailoring and silhouettes to everyday Indian garments. Her brand expanded beyond ready-to-wear to include bridal gowns, resort wear, children's apparel and athleisure. In 2004 she entered the premium sportswear space with embellished bomber jackets and track pants, introducing a more embellished sensibility to performance-inspired pieces.

Monisha’s creations have been retailed internationally through stores such as Voyage in London and Aesthetics in cities including Dubai, New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Denmark, Singapore and Hong Kong, in addition to Ensemble outlets in India. She has participated in major Indian fashion weeks and industry showcases, including Lakme Fashion Week, PCJ Delhi Couture Week, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, India Fashion Week and the Aashni + Co Wedding Show.

In 2015 Lakme Fashion Week marked her 25th year in fashion and coincided with the launch of her e-commerce efforts and the Riviera collection, a line that referenced mid-century coastal style reinterpreted for contemporary women. Her work has been worn by prominent Bollywood figures at public events, award ceremonies and private occasions.

Collaborations and projects

In 2018 Monisha partnered with Shweta Bachchan Nanda to form Monisha & Shweta Luxe Design Private Limited, launching the MXS label. The collaboration debuted on the FDCI + Lakmé Fashion Week 2018 runway and was featured at events such as the 2020 Godrej L’Affaire. Monisha has also been involved in industry efforts that support traditional craft communities: during the COVID-19 pandemic she was among designers participating in Baradari, a fundraising initiative to help weavers, embroiderers and craftspeople.

Public profile

Monisha is known in fashion circles by nicknames that reflect her aesthetic, including Bohemian luxe princess and a re-inventor of the kurti. Her physical appearance has been described in public profiles as roughly 166 cm tall with light brown eyes and dark blonde hair. She is based in Mumbai and lives with a family that is active in the business: her husband, Ravi Jaising, is chairman of Monisha Jaising Luxuries LLP, and her two sons, Karan and Yudhishthir, are designated partners in the company and run other ventures including a fitness club.

Controversies and legal matters

Public reporting associated with Monisha Jaising includes allegations of design copying related to the MXS label in 2018 and a legal dispute following an income tax raid at her home in 2018, during which jewellery was retrieved. Monisha contested aspects of the tax department’s assessment in an appeal to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal.

Personal notes and style

Monisha draws inspiration from Baroque art and architecture as well as vintage European lace and travel. She has used feather accents and elaborate appliqué in couture work and has described taking design cues from palace ceilings and classical motifs. Her brand has produced made-to-measure pieces for family celebrations; she created couture wedding outfits for her son’s 2022 wedding using hand-stitched embellishment and traditional embroidery techniques.

Recent public highlights include the formation and runway launch of MXS with Shweta Bachchan Nanda, continued presence at major fashion weeks, and participation in collaborative relief efforts for craft communities during the pandemic. In 2023 one of her commissioned cricket shirts was worn by Nita Ambani at the women’s IPL auction.
