Monisha Patil Biography
Monisha Patil is an Indian-born chef, food writer and author based in the UK. Daughter of journalist Vimla Patil, she has written books on Indian food and歴
Early life and backgroundMonisha Patil Bharadwaj was born and raised in Mumbai. She attended Bombay International School and St Columba School before going on to HR College of Commerce in Mumbai. She later studied at the London School of Journalism and trained at the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition in Mumbai. Her formal qualifications include a diploma in journalism and a degree in Indian history.
She grew up in a household connected to journalism: her mother, Vimla Patil, was a long‑time editor of a major Indian women’s magazine. That environment exposed Monisha to writing from an early age and helped shape her interest in both words and food.
Career
Monisha’s professional life has combined writing, cooking and teaching. She began writing as a teenager and freelanced for newspapers while still young. Over the years she has authored and co‑authored several books on Indian subjects and food, including titles such as Inside India, Indian Beauty Secrets, Great Diamonds of India, The Indian Pantry (published later as The Indian Kitchen), The Indian Luck Book and the co‑authored cookbooks The Prestige Festival Cookbook and The Exotic Curries of the Orient.
Her writing on food gained recognition in the UK when The Indian Pantry was shortlisted by the Food Writers’ Guild of Great Britain in its second edition. In 2003 she received the Cookery Writer of the Year award from the Guild of Food Writers.
In 2004 Monisha moved into cookery education, opening her cooking school, Cooking With Monisha, in West London. She has worked as a chef and tutor at a number of UK cookery schools, including The Bristol School of Food and Wine, Ashburton Cookery School, Seasoned Cookery School and The Bertinet Kitchen. In 2013 she spent several months as a guest lecturer at SOAS, University of London.
Her work has also included public speaking and collaboration with cultural institutions. She partnered with Kew Gardens in 2019 and contributed to a project with the British Council titled How The British Fell in Love With Curry, covering the history of curry from 1200 to 2017. She has appeared as a guest speaker at venues such as the Welcome Collection in London and took part in a Cookery Legends cruise around the British Isles in 2019.
Monisha has served as a judge for the Guild of Fine Food’s Great Taste Awards for several years and has production credits on a Hindi television show.
Public profile
Monisha is best known in public life as a chef and author who bridges Indian food traditions and a UK audience. Her upbringing alongside her mother’s journalism career is an oft‑mentioned influence on her writing style and professional choices. She has described the differences between her and her mother’s approach to writing as generational and stylistic rather than competitive.
Her culinary preferences include non‑vegetarian cooking, and she has publicly named favourite dishes she enjoys cooking: butter chicken for entertaining, tarka dal as comfort food and mung dal halwa as a special treat.
Personal life
Monisha was married to actor Nitish Bharadwaj; the marriage took place on 27 December 1991 and later ended in divorce in 2005. They have two children, a son, Arrush Bharadwaj, and a daughter, India Bharadwaj. Monisha’s mother is Vimla Patil and she has one brother. She now lives in the UK and is a known dog lover, with a pet named Archie.
