Early life and backgroundMoon Moon Sen was born on 28 March 1954 in 24 Parganas, Kolkata, and raised in Ballygunge. She is the daughter of actress Suchitra Sen and businessman Dibanath Sen and belongs to a Kayastha family. Sen attended Loreto Convent in Shillong and Loreto House in Kolkata before moving on to higher studies at Jadavpur University and Somerville College, Oxford. She completed graduate studies and holds a master’s degree in comparative literature.
Before entering films she worked in education and broadcasting. Sen taught at Ballygunge Girls’ School and at Chitrabani School where she taught graphics; she also had a stint at All India Radio and taught at Ballygunge Government High School. These early roles preceded her transition to a full-time career in the entertainment industry.
Career
Moon Moon Sen built a long career as an actress across regional and national cinema. She established herself in Bengali films before branching out into other language cinemas including Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam and Telugu. Over the course of her screen career she appeared in more than 60 films and some 40 television serials.
Her work earned industry recognition: she won the Nandi Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1987 for the Telugu film Sirivennela and received multiple Kalakar Awards, among other honours. In 1984 she made her Hindi film debut in Andar Bahaar opposite Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff, a role that brought her increased attention and controversy for its boldness at the time. Despite steady work in Hindi films, she remained best known for her contributions to regional cinema and television.

Moon Moon Sen joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in March 2014. On 4 March 2014 the party announced her as its candidate for the Bankura Lok Sabha seat, and she went on to win that constituency in the 2014 general election, defeating long-standing CPI(M) MP Basudeb Acharia. After entering Parliament she was appointed on 1 September 2014 to the Standing Committee on Industry and to the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
For the 2019 general election she was shifted to contest from Asansol, where she faced Babul Supriyo; she lost that contest. Her move from Bankura to Asansol came after TMC leadership allocated Bankura to another candidate.
