Mouni Roy was born on 28 September 1985 in Cooch Behar, West Bengal. She grew up in the same town and attended Kendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat. For higher education she studied at Miranda House, University of Delhi, and later at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi, completing English honours and undertaking a course in mass communication.

She comes from a family with theatrical roots. Her mother, Mukti Roy, is a theatre artist, and her grandfather, Shekhar Chandra Roy, was known for his contributions to theatre in West Bengal. Mouni trained in Kathak and also learned ballet; dance has been a continuing interest alongside her academic studies.

Career

Mouni began her career on television in Ekta Kapoor’s long-running soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, appearing as Krishna Tulsi in 2007. That early exposure led to larger roles, and she became widely recognized for playing Sati in the mythological serial Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev. She further consolidated her television stardom with lead parts in the Naagin franchise, where her portrayal of the shape-shifting protagonist brought strong viewer attention.

Beyond television, Mouni has appeared in films. Her first lead role in a Hindi feature was in Gold (2018), opposite Akshay Kumar. Earlier she had acted in Punjabi cinema with Hero Hitler in Love (2011). She has also provided voice work for animation, lending her voice to the role of Sita in Mahayodha Rama.
