Early life and background

Mrunmayee Deshpande was born on 28 May 1988 in Solapur, Maharashtra. Raised in Pune, she completed her schooling at Renuka Swaroop High School and went on to study at Sir Parashurambhau College (SP College) in Pune, where she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. During her school and college years she was active in theatre, a path she chose deliberately because of the strong drama culture at her college.

Career

Mrunmayee began her film career with a Marathi role in It’s Breaking News (2007) and soon made her Bollywood debut in Humne Jeena Seekh Liya (2008). Over the following years she built a steady body of work in Marathi cinema, appearing in titles such as Ek Cup Chya (2009), Aandhali Koshimbir (2013), Sata Lota Pan Sagla Khota (2014), Katyar Kaljat Ghusali (2015) and Natsamrat (2016). After her marriage she continued working in films including Farzand (2018), Bogda (2018), Shikari (2018) and Fatteshikast (2019).

Her experience extends beyond acting. She worked in television early on with the serial Agnihotra (2007) and in theatre with the play A Fair Deal (2015). On digital platforms she has been seen in the Marathi web series Soppa Nasta Kahi (2021) and the Hindi series Mumbai Diaries 26/11 (2021), where she appears as Dr. Sujata Ajawale.

In 2020 Mrunmayee moved into direction with the Marathi film Mann Fakiraa, a project she developed over several years. She has described the film’s idea as something that originated unexpectedly and gestated before she pursued writing and directing. To promote the film she and the cast adopted a hands-on approach, carrying placards and appealing directly to audiences.

Alongside acting and directing, Mrunmayee has worked as a television anchor. Her hosting credits include the singing competition Yuva Singer Ek Number (2019), Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Marathi L’il Champs (2021) and the comedy show Comedychi Bullet Train on Colors Marathi.

Public profile

Mrunmayee has been recognised within Marathi entertainment circles, winning the Special Face of the Year award at the Zee Marathi Awards in 2010 and earning a Filmfare Marathi nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) for Miss U Mister in 2020. She is an active social media user and regularly posts on Instagram and Facebook, sharing aspects of her professional life and personal interests.

Personal life

Mrunmayee married Swapnil Rao, a businessman and permaculture designer, on 3 December 2016 in a traditional Maharashtrian ceremony. The couple honeymooned in New Zealand. Her parents are Vivek and Pratibha Deshpande, and she has a younger sister, Gautami Deshpande, who transitioned from engineering to acting.

Away from work she enjoys outdoor pursuits — trekking and motorcycling are among her interests — and she is a dog owner; her Golden Retriever is named Carbon. She follows a non-vegetarian diet.
