Muhammed Anas Yahiya Biography

Muhammed Anas Yahiya is an Indian 400m specialist from Nilamel, Kerala. Rising from school-level long jump to become one of India's leading quarter-milers,

Early life and background

Muhammed Anas Yahiya was born on 17 September 1994 in Nilamel village in Kerala. He grew up in a family with an athletic background; his father, Yahiya, was involved in the sport. Anas attended Nilamel MMHS School and Mar Basil School, Kothamangalam, and later graduated from Sreekrishna College, Guruvayur. He is known locally by the nickname Nilamel Express.

Anas showed athletic promise from a young age. Initially trained for long jump at the Style Sports Academy in Nilamel because of his height, he became a school long jump champion. A last-minute selection for a 400-meter race at school set him on the path to sprinting, and he began collecting medals for district and state teams as a junior.

Career

Anas turned professional in 2016 after competing at the 3rd Indian Grand Prix in Bangalore. Earlier successes included a gold at the junior national championships in 2012 and a silver in the 4x400m relay for Kerala at national level in 2015. He joined the Indian Navy as a seaman on 7 May 2015.

2016 proved pivotal. At the Indian Grand Prix quartet that included Kunhu Muhammed, Ayyasamy Dharun and Arokia Rajiv, the team set a new national record in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:00.09. Later that year Anas recorded 45.44 seconds in the 400m at the Polish Athletics Championships, a mark that helped secure his place at the Rio Olympics.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics he improved his own best to 45.40 seconds and made a memorable impression on the international stage. He has worked under coaches including Galina Bukharina, PB Jaikumar and Mohammed Kunji.

In 2018 Anas collected three silver medals at the Asian Games: individual 400m, men’s 4x400m and the mixed 4x400m relay. He clocked 45.69 seconds in the individual 400m at that meet. The same year he produced strong performances at the Commonwealth Games, reaching the final of the men’s 400m — the second Indian ever to do so after Milkha Singh in 1958 — and set a national record of 45.31 seconds, later improving that mark to 45.21 seconds at the Czech Athletics Championships.

Anas has been recognized as one of India’s fastest 400m runners and is noted as the third Indian male to qualify for the Olympics in the 400m, following Milkha Singh and KM Binu. He has also received the Arjuna Award from the Government of India.

Public profile

Anas stands around 177 cm (5'10") tall and his competition weight is listed at about 70 kg. He has brown eyes and natural black hair. His sporting specialties are sprint events, with the 400m as his primary focus. Hobbies noted include talking with friends and family, playing online games, listening to music and watching movies. As of the latest available information he is unmarried.
