Early life and backgroundMukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 19 April 1957 in Aden, then the Colony of Aden (now part of Yemen). His family returned to India in 1958, settling in Mumbai. He spent his school years at Hill Grange High School on Peddar Road and later attended St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, before moving to the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), where he completed a BE in chemical engineering. During his student years he combined college study with work in his father’s office and finished among the top ten students at Bombay University.
Ambani briefly enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay before transferring to UDCT. He later enrolled at Stanford University for an MBA and studied financial economics under William F. Sharpe, but left the program in 1980 when his father asked him to return to India to help set up polyester manufacturing for the family business.
Career
Mukesh Ambani formally joined Reliance in Mumbai in 1981. Early assignments included work under Rasikbhai Meswani and hands-on roles establishing polyester and petrochemical manufacturing facilities. He helped set up a Polyester Filament Yarn plant and a petrochemical complex at Patalganga in Raigad, and played an important part in shaping policies that increased Reliance Polyester Limited’s production and sales.
Under Ambani’s leadership, Reliance expanded into large-scale refining. In July 1999 he commissioned a refinery at Jamnagar with a capacity of 668,000 barrels per day and later established a second Jamnagar refinery that increased capacity to 1.24 million barrels per day, helping to make the city a global refining hub.
Following the death of his father Dhirubhai Ambani in 2002, Mukesh and his brother Anil took collective control of Reliance Industries Limited. Over time differences between the siblings became public and their roles within the organisation diverged.

Over the years Ambani has received numerous awards recognising his business leadership. These include Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year (2000), a series of leadership and business awards from national and international organisations through the 2000s and 2010s, honorary doctorates from Indian universities and institutes, and industry distinctions such as the Othmer Gold Medal for entrepreneurial leadership. He was named Entrepreneur of the Decade by the All India Management Association and has been widely recognised by economic and business publications and councils.

Ambani married Nita Ambani on 8 March 1985 in an arranged match arranged by their families after his parents saw her perform Bharatanatyam. The couple have three children: two sons, Akash and Anant, and a daughter, Isha. Akash is associated with Reliance Jio; Isha serves as a director at Reliance Jio Infocomm and Reliance Retail. Two of the children, Akash and Isha, were born via IVF.
His parents were Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries Limited, and Kokilaben Ambani. He has one brother, Anil Ambani, and two younger sisters, Deepti Salgaocar and Nina Kothari.
