Early life and background
Mukesh Madhavan was born on 5 March 1957 in Kollam, Kerala. He grew up in Kollam and attended Infant Jesus Anglo Indian High School in Tangasseri before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Sree Narayana College, Kollam. He is the son of theatre director and actor O. Madhavan and actress Vijayakumari, and counts siblings Sandhya Rajendran and Jayshree among his immediate family.

Career
Mukesh began his professional life in drama before moving into films. His screen debut came in the Malayalam film Balloon (1982), in which he played the character Chandu. He later appeared in Tamil cinema, debuting in Manaivi Oru Manickam (1990) as Ravi.

Across the 1980s and 1990s Mukesh developed a reputation for comic and supporting roles in Malayalam cinema. A breakthrough came with his performance as Gopalakrishnan in Ramji Rao Speaking, a role that increased his public profile and is commonly cited as one of his best-known parts. He frequently collaborated with leading actors of the period and appeared in films such as Hello My Dear Wrong Number, Thalavattam, Vandanam, Akkare Akkare Akkare, Kakkakuyil and Boeing Boeing.
