Mukhtar Ansari Biography

Mukhtar Ansari was an Indian politician from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, known for his long and controversial presence in Purvanchal politics. A five-time MLA

Early life and background

Mukhtar Ansari was born on 30 June 1963 in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, into a Sunni Muslim family with a notable political and public-service legacy. He completed a BA degree in 1984 from Post Graduate Gazipur College Rambadh. His family included several politically active members: elder brothers Sibakatullah Ansari and Afzal Ansari were both involved in politics, and his grandfather, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, had been a prominent figure in India’s freedom movement and public life.

Career

Ansari entered active politics after having been involved in student council elections at his college. He built a base in eastern Uttar Pradesh (Purvanchal) and served as the member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Mau constituency on multiple occasions. Over the course of his political career he was elected MLA from Mau in 1996, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017, representing different affiliations at different times: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 1996 and later (2007–2010; rejoining in 2017), as an independent candidate in 2002 and 2007, and on a Quami Ekta Dal ticket in 2012. In 2009 he stood for the Lok Sabha from Varanasi on a BSP ticket but lost.

His political journey included the formation of a regional party, Quami Ekta Dal, in 2012, which he launched with his brothers after being expelled from the BSP in 2010. He rejoined the BSP ahead of the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Public profile

Ansari was a polarizing figure in Uttar Pradesh politics. He was widely described in public records as one of the strongman politicians of Purvanchal, and his career intersected with allegations and legal troubles that attracted sustained media and judicial attention. Official records list numerous criminal charges registered against him, spanning offences such as intimidation, attempts to murder, murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy, among others.

Several high-profile convictions and court actions marked the later years of his life. In 2022, the Allahabad High Court sentenced him under the Gangsters Act in a case linked to the killing of a jail superintendent, and handed down another sentence for criminal intimidation. The Enforcement Directorate arrested him in December 2022 in relation to a money-laundering investigation. In 2023 and 2024, courts convicted him in multiple cases, including a kidnapping and murder case that resulted in a ten-year sentence and a separate life sentence in an older murder case; a special court in March 2024 awarded a life sentence in a fake arms licence case.

Throughout his career he was often publicly portrayed as a powerful local operator with influence over regional contract work and local networks. His activities were frequently discussed in connection with control over government contracts and local businesses in parts of Purvanchal.

Personal life

Mukhtar Ansari married Afsa Ansari on 15 October 1989. The couple had two sons: Abbas Ansari, who is described as an ace shooter and a politician, and Umar Ansari, also a politician. His mother, Begum Rabia, died in December 2018. Other notable relatives include figures from earlier generations who held public positions.

Public controversies and legal record

Ansari’s public record includes an extensive list of criminal charges and several convictions in long-running cases. Legal actions included convictions and sentences handed down by courts in Uttar Pradesh and the Allahabad High Court, arrests by investigative agencies, and periods spent in custody. Some convictions were later the subject of appeals and bail orders in higher courts.
