Mukta Puntambekar was born on 14 June in Pune, Maharashtra. She completed her schooling at MES Sou Vimlabai Garware High School, Pune, and went on to graduate from the University of Pune in 1993. Career

Trained as a clinical psychologist, Mukta joined Muktangan, a rehabilitation centre in Pune that was established by her parents. The centre originally began as a division within Yerwada Mental Hospital and later expanded into independent facilities providing treatment and support for people with substance-use issues.
