Early life and backgroundMukul Rohatgi was born on 17 August 1955 in Delhi. He completed a B.Com. (Honours) from Delhi University in 1975 and earned his LLB from Bombay University in 1978. Over the years he has received advanced academic recognition, including a Doctorate of Law from Fakir Mohan University in 2011 and an honorary LL.D. from Amity University in 2016.
Rohatgi comes from a legal family: his father, Awadh Behari Rohatgi, served as a judge of the Delhi High Court and later practised as a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India. Mukul is married to Vasudha Rohatgi, who is also an advocate and the daughter of the late senior advocate G.L. Sanghi. The couple have two sons, Nikhil and Sameer Rohatgi, both practising advocates.
Career
Rohatgi enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1978 and began his legal career in the Delhi High Court, including a period working under Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal. He built a practice that led to his appointment as a senior counsel by the Delhi High Court in 1994.
His service as a law officer began formally when he was appointed Additional Solicitor General of India in November 1999, a role he held until May 2004. He later became the 14th Attorney General for India, serving from 19 June 2014 to 18 June 2017. During his tenure as the country’s top law officer he represented the central government in numerous high-profile constitutional and public law matters.
Before and after his term as Attorney General, Rohatgi has appeared for a range of clients in the Supreme Court and other forums.
