Mukunda Goswami Biography
Mukunda Goswami, born Michael Grant in 1942 in Portland, Oregon, is an American spiritual leader who played a central role in establishing the Hare Krishna
Early life and backgroundMukunda Goswami was born Michael Grant on April 10, 1942, in Portland, Oregon. Raised in an American family that included a brother who became a jazz musician, he pursued higher education at Reed College in Portland. Early in life he followed a musical path and relocated from Portland to New York to develop a career as a professional jazz musician.
In 1965 he encountered A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and in 1966 he became one of Prabhupada’s earliest initiated disciples. At that time he received the Sanskrit name Mukunda Dasa, which later became the basis for the name by which he is widely known today.
Career
Mukunda was a prominent figure in the formative years of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Shortly after his initiation he and a small group of devotees rented a storefront in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and helped establish the movement’s first temple there. He organized and participated in public events that tied the movement into the wider cultural scene, including the major Mantra-Rock Dance.
In 1967 Mukunda founded the first Hare Krishna temple in San Francisco. The following year he and his wife traveled to London under the guidance of Prabhupada to help establish ISKCON in England, becoming part of the movement’s early international expansion.
Mukunda’s musical background found a new outlet within ISKCON. In 1971 he arranged music for the devotional album The Radha Krsna Temple, produced by George Harrison and released on Apple Records. The recording included the chant of the Hare Krishna mantra, which reached a broader audience and achieved chart recognition in the United Kingdom.
He continued to build organizational communications for the movement. In 1977 Mukunda founded the ISKCON Communications Office in Los Angeles. Over subsequent decades he served in leadership roles focused on communication; from 1984 to 1999 he was the Minister of Communication for ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission. In 1982 he accepted sannyasa, the renounced order of life, from Jayapataka Swami.
Mukunda has also worked as a writer, editor, and researcher. His publications include titles on the movement’s music, devotional practice, and perspectives on topics such as reincarnation, vegetarian cooking, and environmental concerns. Several of his books chronicle the arrival and development of the Hare Krishna movement in the West.
Public profile
Mukunda’s life has been both public and mobile. After years in the United States—living in cities such as San Diego—he spent time in New Zealand and later became part of the ISKCON New Govardhana community near Murwillumbah, New South Wales, Australia. His profile within ISKCON has remained significant: he was among the first Western disciples of Prabhupada and a visible organizer during the movement’s early public outreach.
Personal life
Born under the zodiac sign Aries, Mukunda is American by nationality and practices the Hindu faith as a leader in ISKCON. He was married during the early years of his involvement with the movement; his ex-wife is named Janaki. The couple separated while living in England, and he did not remarry. His family background includes a father who worked as a tap dancer and a brother, Tom Grant, who pursued jazz music professionally. Mukunda’s height is about 1.63 meters (5 feet 4 inches), with black eyes.
Health and recent events
In October 2015 Mukunda suffered a fall in his bathroom that resulted in a fractured hip and required surgery. While hospitalized he experienced a heart attack; devotees organized kirtans and other prayers for his recovery. As of 2022 he remained active in advisory roles, serving on the International Council of Jurists (ICJ) Advisory Board.
