Early life and background

Munawwar Rana was born on 26 November 1952 in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, into a Muslim family. During his childhood the family moved to Kolkata, where he received most of his schooling. His upbringing was shaped by the aftermath of partition and its effects on his family: while many relatives migrated to Pakistan, his father chose to remain in India. The family lost zamindari holdings and his father later built a livelihood through a transport business.

As a young man in Kolkata, Rana became involved with leftist circles and formed friendships with Naxalite activists. His father disapproved of those connections and asked him to leave the house. Rana later described the subsequent two years of wandering as an intense learning period that taught him about human values and life.

Career

Munawwar Rana made his public debut as a poet at a mushaira in Delhi and went on to become a well-known shayar writing in Urdu, Hindi and Awadhi. He credited much of his development as a poet to his mentor Wali Aasi, whom he met in Lucknow. Lucknow left a lasting impression on him and became his favourite city.

A defining feature of Rana’s work was his lyrical celebration of mothers and motherhood; a number of his couplets center on filial love and domestic tenderness. His book titled Maa gathered notable attention for collecting such verses. He wrote in a style that often mixed Urdu with regional Hindi and Awadhi words, and many readers recognized him for addressing sensitive themes in that idiom.

Rana received several awards over the course of his career, including the Rais Amrohvi Award in 1993, the Dilkush Award in 1995, the Saleem Jafri Award in 1997, the Saraswati Samaj Award in 2004, the Ghalib Award (Udaipur) in 2005, the Kavita ka Kabir Samman Upadhi (Indore) in 2006, and the Maulana Abdul Razzaq Malihabadi Award from the West Bengal Urdu Academy in 2011. In 2014 he was given the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu literature by the Government of India.

In October 2015 he returned the Sahitya Akademi Award and publicly stated he would not accept government awards in future; that action and the statements around it attracted criticism in media and on social platforms. Earlier in 2015 a controversial couplet circulated on social media attributed to Rana after the Dadri incident; he denied authorship of that verse and presented evidence to contest the claim.

Rana’s personal tastes and habits were occasionally noted alongside his poetry: he enjoyed flying kites and listening to classical Indian music, counted Wali Aasi and Rahat Indori among favourite shayars, and regarded Lucknow as his favourite city. He was known to smoke cigarettes occasionally and to drink alcohol on certain occasions.

Rana was married and had five children: one son, Tabrez Rana, and four daughters, Uroosa Imran Rana, Sumaiya Rana and Fauzia Rana among them, with at least some of his daughters involved in politics. He remained close to his mother throughout life, and that bond is a recurring subject in his poetry.

Health and death

Munawwar Rana had been battling throat cancer. He died on 14 January 2024 at SGPGI Hospital in Lucknow. Reports list cardiac arrest as the cause of death, and some sources noted multiple organ failure while he was undergoing treatment. He was 71 years old at the time of his passing.
