Munshi Premchand Biography

Born Dhanpat Rai Shrivastava and known by his pen name Munshi Premchand, he became one of the foremost writers in Urdu and Hindi literature. Over a career²

Early life and background
Munshi Premchand was born Dhanpat Rai Shrivastava on 31 July 1880 in the village of Lamahi in the Benares region of British India. He belonged to a Kayastha family. His father, Ajaib Rai, worked as a post office clerk, and his mother was Anandi Devi. Premchand’s early childhood was marked by loss: his mother died when he was eight, and his grandmother, who subsequently helped raise him, also passed away while he was still young. These early experiences of isolation and family upheaval informed themes that recur throughout his writing.

He began formal learning at a madrasa in Lalpur, where he studied Urdu and Persian under a Maulvi. Later he attended Queen’s College in Benares and sat the matriculation exam, passing in the second division. He also studied at Central Hindu College and took courses at Allahabad University, completing a BA in English literature, Persian, and history in 1919. His schooling and early exposure to Persian and Urdu stories, plus avid reading in English, shaped his bilingual literary voice.

Career
Premchand started working young: his first jobs included serving as a bookseller and coaching a lawyer’s son. Teaching positions followed, including posts in Chunar and at the Government District School in Bahraich and later in Pratapgarh and Kanpur. It was during his time in Pratapgarh that he came to be addressed as “Munshi.”

He wrote under several names, most notably Munshi Premchand and earlier pseudonyms such as Nawab Rai. His first published novel, written in Urdu, appeared in 1903 under the title Asrar-e-Ma’abid (listed as Devasthan Rahasya in Hindi transliteration). That early work took on subjects such as exploitation and corruption and attracted critical attention.

Premchand produced fourteen novels and nearly three hundred short stories, along with essays, children’s stories, and biographies. He became known for bringing realism into Hindustani literature and for exploring social issues like the feudal system, child widowhood, prostitution, corruption, colonialism, and widespread poverty. Among his better-known novels are Seva Sadan (1919), Nirmala (1925), Gaban (1931), Karmabhoomi (1932), and Godan (1936). His final, incomplete novel was Mangalsootra, published posthumously in 1936.

His first published short story appeared in the Urdu magazine Zamana in 1907. Over the years he contributed many notable stories to that and other periodicals; famous short stories include Bade Bhai Sahab (1910), Panch Parameshvar (1916), Boodhi Kaki (1921), Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1924), Namak Ka Daroga (1925), Poos Ki Raat (1930), and Idgah (1933). Several of his stories were collected in the multi-volume Mansarovar, produced between 1900 and 1936.

Public profile
Premchand’s writing earned him recognition as one of the leading figures in Urdu-Hindi letters. He is often called “Upanyas Samrat” or emperor of novels by later Hindi writers for his contributions. His literary influences ranged from Persian classics he encountered in childhood to English novelists and journalists such as George W. M. Reynolds; he also admired writers like Charles Dickens and Guy de Maupassant and philosophers and public figures including Swami Vivekananda and leaders of India’s freedom movement.

His work reflected a growing engagement with national issues. He wrote articles that supported India’s struggle for self-rule and shifted over time from sympathies with moderate leaders to alignment with more assertive nationalists.

Personal life
Premchand married as a teenager while studying in the ninth grade; that first marriage ended when his wife left to return to her family. In 1906 he married Shivarani Devi, a child widow. He had three children with his second wife: two sons, Amrit Rai and Sripath Rai, and a daughter, Kamala Devi. His son Amrit Rai later became an author.

Later years and death
Premchand continued to publish throughout his life. He died on 8 October 1936 in Varanasi after several days of illness. He was 56 years old at the time of his death.

Latest updates
Collections and posthumous publications continued to bring his stories to readers: a short story titled “Cricket Matching” was published in Zamana in 1938 after his death. His legacy remains linked to Mansarovar and the many novels and short stories that gave early 20th-century Indian literature a strong realist bent.
