Early life and backgroundMurli Manohar Joshi was born on 5 January 1934 in Nainital, then part of the United Provinces in British India. He grew up in Uttarakhand and completed advanced studies in the sciences, earning a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and a PhD in spectroscopy. After finishing his doctorate he began an academic career that included teaching physics at Allahabad University. His early political leanings developed alongside involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from a young age and participation in grassroots movements in the 1950s.
Career
Joshi’s public life spans student politics, academia and national leadership. In the mid-1950s he was active in campaigns such as the Cow Protection Movement (1953–54) and the Kumbh Kisan Andolan in Uttar Pradesh (1955). His first entry to parliamentary politics came with the Janata Party; in 1977 he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Almora when the Janata Party formed the country’s first non-Congress government.
When the Bharatiya Janata Party was formed in 1980, Joshi joined the new party and rose quickly through its organisational ranks, serving as general secretary and later treasurer. He was the BJP’s national president from 1991 to 1993. Joshi returned to the Lok Sabha from Allahabad in 1996 and represented that constituency until 2004. He later won election from Varanasi in 2009 and from Kanpur in 2014 after vacating Varanasi for Narendra Modi.
At the national level, Joshi held important cabinet responsibilities. He served as Union Minister for Human Resource Development from 1998 to 2004 in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. In 1996 he was briefly Home Minister for about two weeks under the same prime minister. In 2009 he was named chairman of the BJP’s Manifesto Preparation Board.
Public profile
Beyond elected office, Joshi’s profile is shaped by his identity as a scholar-politician and a long-term RSS-linked leader of the BJP. He has written and published work related to physics, including research in Hindi, reflecting his academic background. Joshi was jailed during the Emergency in 1975 and released ahead of the 1977 general elections, a period that helped launch his national political career.
Over the decades his name has appeared in high-profile controversies and legal proceedings connected to the political events of the early 1990s; a Special CBI Court in Lucknow acquitted him and others in the Babri Masjid demolition case in September 2020. He and other senior public figures have also been the subject of media reports and investigative pieces mentioned in public records.
Personal life
Joshi is married to Tarla Joshi and is the father of two daughters, Nivedita Joshi and Priyamvada Joshi. He maintains a residence listed in New Delhi. He is associated with Hinduism and counts figures such as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and philosopher Deendayal Upadhyaya among influences cited in public profiles.
