Muthulakshmi (Veerappan’s Biography

Widow of forest bandit Veerappan, Muthulakshmi has moved from a life entwined with the forest to public life as a politician and social activist in Tamiln

Early life and background

Muthulakshmi was born in 1974 in Neruppur in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu. Her parents were farmers, and she has an elder sister. She completed schooling up to the eighth grade.

She married Muthulakshmi Veerappan in January 1990. The couple lived for extended periods in forest areas while Veerappan was active. The marriage produced three daughters; the eldest, Vidya Rani (also known as Vijayalakshmi), was born in 1990, and a second daughter, Prabha, was born in 1992. The family has endured severe personal tragedies, including the death of one of her daughters.

Career

Following years connected to Veerappans life in the forest, Muthulakshmi later entered public life. She has worked as a politician and stood as an independent candidate in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Pennagaram constituency. In 2019 she joined the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi, continuing her involvement in regional politics.

Her public work has included social and community-focused initiatives. In January 2018 she founded Mann Kaakkum Veerathamizhar Peramaippu, an organization aimed at pressing government authorities to provide fresh water for agriculture and to support farmers. She also established a self-help group called Malaival Makkal Urimai Iyakkam to assist underprivileged villagers living along the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border. Over time she has been involved in supporting people affected by incidents related to Veerappans activities.

Public profile

Muthulakshmis life has been shaped by long-running legal and security matters tied to her late husbands activities. In the 1990s and early 2000s she faced police attention and was detained on several occasions. Reports from that period describe harsh treatment while in custody and later legal action that resulted in a case against police. In 2000 she was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of the actor Rajkumar; a court in Erode cleared her and a number of others, finding insufficient proof of the charges against them. Subsequent proceedings over the years also led to acquittals in multiple serious cases, including two murder cases, two bomb blast cases, and a case relating to an attack on a police station in Karnataka.

After Veerappan was killed in 2004 during Operation Cocoon, Muthulakshmi experienced a very difficult period. She attempted suicide but received emergency medical care. With outside assistance she later found employment at a textile mill in Coimbatore, working there for several years while keeping her identity private.

She has also used legal avenues to protect her interests and those of her family. In 2013 she successfully litigated against a filmmaker for the portrayal of her late husband, securing a monetary award prior to the release of the film.

Latest updates

In the late 2010s and beyond, Muthulakshmi shifted more visibly into organized public service and politics. Her 2018 founding of an advocacy organization and the creation of a local self-help group reflect a focus on agricultural water issues and rural welfare. Her formal party affiliation with Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi in March 2019 marked another step in her public role.

Physical profile and personal notes

Muthulakshmi is described as approximately 163 cm tall (about 5 4) with brown eyes and black hair. She is an Indian national and, as of 2023, is reported to be 49 years old. She is widowed and a mother of three daughters, one of whom has been active publicly as an actor and later entered politics.

Throughout her adult life she has moved from living in forest seclusion to navigating the legal system, building community organizations, and contesting elections, shaping a public profile distinct from the notoriety of her late husband.
