Early life and background

Narayanaswami Srinivasan was born on 3 January 1945 in Kallidaikurichi in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Tamil Nadu and later made Chennai his hometown. Srinivasan attended M. C. C. Higher Secondary School in Chetpet, Chennai, and went on to study at Loyola College, Chennai. He completed a master’s degree in chemical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

Career

Srinivasan built a business career centred on India Cements Limited, the company where his father worked and where he returned after his studies. Over several decades he rose to senior leadership positions and served as vice-chairman and managing director of India Cements. Under his stewardship the company grew its capacity and acquired other cement assets in South India.

Beyond cement, Srinivasan expanded his business interests into related industrial areas and served in leadership roles across trade bodies. He led the Cement Manufacturers Association for multiple terms and chaired the board of governors of the National Council for Cement and Building Materials. He also served as chairman of the Development Council for the Cement Industry and held the presidency of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Srinivasan’s connection to sport developed alongside his industrial career. India Cements owned the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings, which Srinivasan bought in 2008. He held prominent administrative positions in Indian cricket, serving as Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before becoming BCCI President and later taking up posts in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).
