Early life and backgroundNaba Kishore Das was born on 7 January 1962 in Mirgamunda, Maneswar Block in Sambalpur District, Odisha. He grew up in the region that remained central to his political life and education. Das attended Mudipada Upper Primary School and Government High School in Bhojpur, Sambalpur, and later studied at Gangadhar Meher College and Gangadhar Meher University in Sambalpur, where he was active in student politics and served as college students' union president.
Das completed multiple higher education degrees: a Bachelor of Commerce, a Master of Arts in English, a Master of Commerce and a Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB). His family background included a mining transportation business operating in the Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts.
Career
Das began his political involvement in student organisations and moved into mainstream party politics. He joined the Indian National Congress in the 1980s and contested the Jharsuguda assembly seat in 2004 unsuccessfully. He was elected as MLA from Jharsuguda in 2009 and retained the seat in 2014.
In 2019 Das resigned from the Indian National Congress and joined the Biju Janata Dal. Running as a BJD candidate, he won the Jharsuguda assembly seat again in 2019 and was appointed Odisha's Health and Family Welfare Minister that year. Over his legislative career he served on several committees, including the House Committee on Railways, the Library Committee, and standing committees related to industries, mines, commerce and transport.
Das was known as a close associate of the state’s chief minister and took part in both constituency work and broader party activities. He was also reported to own firearms and held licences in his younger years. Outside politics, he supported charitable causes and temples and was known to read historical books.

Das combined an active public life with involvement in local business and social initiatives. He was married to Minati Das and they had two children: a son, Bishal Das, and a daughter, Deepali Das, who is also noted as a politician. His parents were Narasingh Chandra Das and Bishnupriya Das, and he had several siblings.
During his career Das faced controversy. In December 2015 he was suspended from the Odisha Legislative Assembly for a week following allegations that he viewed inappropriate video content on his mobile phone during a session; he denied deliberate wrongdoing and later the charges did not result in further action due to insufficient evidence. Death
On 29 January 2023, while attending a public event in Brajrajnagar, Jharsuguda district, Das was shot multiple times and was critically wounded. He was airlifted to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar and received emergency treatment, including surgery, but succumbed to his injuries later that day. He was 61 years old. The assault occurred in public near Gandhi Chowk; the shooting was carried out by a serving Assistant Sub-Inspector, who was later identified. Das was cremated on 30 January 2023 with state honours.
