Nalini Chidambaram Biography

Nalini Chidambaram is an Indian advocate from Chennai who rose to prominence as a senior lawyer at the Madras High Court and is known publicly as the wife‎

Early life and background

Nalini Chidambaram was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in 1946. She grew up in a family with strong ties to the judiciary and public life: her father, P.S. Kailasam, served as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and later as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, and her mother, Soundara Kailasam, was known as a Tamil poet and orator. Nalini attended Vidyodaya School and Stella Maris College in Chennai before moving on to higher studies at the University of Madras.

She completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Madras and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Laws from Madras Law College (now Dr Ambedkar Government Law College). Her father encouraged her to pursue a career in law, and she went on to train and practice in the Madras legal community.

Career

Nalini Chidambaram built a career as an advocate at the Madras High Court. Early in her professional life she faced resistance when seeking mentorship; several established lawyers declined to train her, including relatives. Eventually she and her husband joined Mr. K. K. Venugopal to continue their legal training.

She became a senior advocate in 1990, and she holds the distinction of being the first woman designated as a Senior Advocate in the Madras Bar Association. Over the years she maintained a practice at the Madras High Court and remained active in legal work rather than accepting judicial appointments, citing a preference for advocacy and engagement with political issues from a professional standpoint.

Personal life and family

Nalini married P. Chidambaram, whom she met at the University of Madras law faculty, on 11 December 1968. Her father initially objected to the marriage on caste grounds; the couple married despite that opposition. They have one son, Karti Chidambaram. Nalini's family includes siblings who pursued professional careers: an elder sister who became a paediatrician, a younger sister who worked in agriculture, and a brother who is an orthopaedic surgeon.

Public profile

Nalini has been a visible figure both because of her legal career and her marriage to P. Chidambaram, a senior political leader and former Union minister. She has stated that she enjoys argument and advocacy, which influenced her decision to remain a practicing lawyer rather than move to the bench. She has also said she enjoys politics but prefers not to take part in active electoral politics herself.

Her mother, Soundara Kailasam, passed away in October 2010, an event that drew public attention and visitors from prominent political figures.

Controversies and legal matters

Nalini Chidambaram's public life has included several matters that attracted media and official attention. In 2005 she was appointed as senior counsel to the Central Board of Direct Taxes, a move that generated objections in Parliament because the appointment fell within the remit of her husband's ministry. Allegations and investigations connected to financial transactions and the Sharda Group have involved examinations by investigative agencies and tax authorities at different times. In 2018 and 2019 official filings and charge sheets related to reporting of overseas assets and payments appearing in investigations were reported by authorities.

Latest updates

As of the details available, Nalini remains a practising senior advocate based in Chennai. Information publicly recorded about her includes property and asset declarations made in earlier years, and the ongoing presence of legal proceedings and inquiries that have been reported in the public record.
